Hey community I’m looking for some advice with my old stumpjumper (‘86 I think). Bought this thing in 2019, took it on a 5 month tour in South America with a buddy. We had zero touring or maintenance experience. Somehow survived. It sat in a cardboard box in Lima for 3 years after COVID ended our tour. I rebuilt it at my local community bike shop summer 2024 and have been hoping to tour again on it. Unfortunately I just bucked it off my platform rack going up a steep dirt hill last month, and I kinda toasted the friction shifters (original parts maybe, not sure) 😢 now I’m trying to decide what to do /what to replace them with. I also would like to find a roller cam brake substitute for the rear since I don’t currently have a rear brake. Any advice would be incredible!

  1. For the rear brake I don’t think there are any roller cams on the market now, but the term for what to replace it with is a U brake. The shifter question is easy and there are numerous options, both indexed and friction.
