Knowing what – and how much – to take on a long ride can be a tricky buisness. We’ve taken the guess work out of it, and tell you what you need while traveling light.

There are three essentials to cover: fluid, food, and tools.

We recommend, if possible, taking two bottles and filling up mid ride to make sure you are not burdened with unnecessary weight. Take one piece of food per hour, but you need to find out what works for you.

Finally, take two inner tubes, pump and a multi tool to cover the basic mechanical issues you might encounter. Remember though that nothing substitutes a well serviced bike before you set out.

[Music] I like to travel light but I make sure I have what I need tools food and fluid are the three most important things to take on 100K ride if I’m on my own I take two tubes if I’m riding with a group I only take one as there’s normally one to borrow don’t forget your tire levers and a patch kit for if you’re having a really unlucky day a chain tool and Allen keys will cover the majority of on-road repairs choose a multi-tool that combines both there’s always a compromise to be made you can’t take a full tool kit with you obviously so you have to choose what to leave behind personally I’d rather cover the Basics and make sure my bike is in good shape before I set off which is the best thing you can do to avoid any mechanical problems mini pump which goes in the middle back pocket of my jersey food work on having one piece of food per hour a gel an energy bar banana whatever takes your fancy obviously if you need more food take more but this is a good general rule to start with I put food in my jerseys back pockets two bottles with energy powder this might be too much for some people but again start with it and you can always cut down I always plan my rise to include stopping for water on Route so if this is possible do it taking more than two bottles on a ride just weighs you down a windproof Gile or jacket in most climates it’s important to take an extra layer of clothing with you for if you get stuck at the roadside or the weather changes this goes in the middle back pocket phone great for safety but for the sake of your riding mates put it on silent money and credit card to get the coffees in buy an emergency can of Coke or to get you home if need be but what else do you take let us know in the comments section below you don’t want to get too hot obviously but they still increase Comfort hugely by taking moisture away from your skin and no Pro would be without one always look for jerseys with full length zips

  1. I always have a small backpack to hold everything – my bike only has the back light on it, the holder for the front light and the bike computer components! The bag has: 1 tube (quickly replace and go), 1 mini pump, valve adapter, tube patches (if being very unlucky) and a strip of old rubber for tire cuts (to avoid further punctures at the same tire spot), tire levers, bites reliever stick, allen 4/5 mm, front headlight, antibacterial wet wipes, 1.5lt water bottle (filled full or half depending on distance/weather), phone (for strava recording and gps if I got lost), money and for food I typically have nuts mix. Occasionally I can carry extra clothing if the weather looks strange. Once I had two punctures at the same ride, the most frustrating experience but managed to go home because I was prepared. I think I'll now also add a card with emergency contact detail just in case and a headache pain killer pill, thanks to the comments I read here. I always carry that bag, regardless the distance but if I go at remote places over the mountains, this bag is of paramount importance. That is 1.664kg + the water bottle weight for peace of mind. I also eat a banana before any lengthy ride.

  2. Tube, three water bottles with gatorade, three carb bars, tire levers, frame pump, ID, debit card, $5 cash. All will fit in my saddle bag or frame cages or jersey pocket. I drink about a quart of fluid every 7 miles if it is hot.

  3. Rode 100 km once, and ended the trip at a bar with a friend. When we proudly told the bartender what we had just done, he looked at us, exclaimed: "What? You fucking dummies!", and served us two beers. I love that memory.

  4. I always overpack on long rides because I'd rather have extra than not enough. Two tubes, two eletrolyte bottle, quickpump wit extra c02 cartridge, multi-tool, shims, money clip, phone (mounted on the bike), small knife (for up to 40 miles), above that I bring homemade sweet potatoe cakes. I overhydrate before long rides so I never use up all my water but I bring it just in case.

  5. I always take a first aid kit with me. No matter how long or short a ride will be you never know when you might need it. I have used it twice in 3 years once for myself and once for another rider I came across on my ride.

  6. I was riding bicycle at 10 km/hr on Bangalore-Mysore expressway, maximum I reached 17 km/hr in no traffic area, so I covered 45 km in 2 hrs 30 mins, which was my longest ride till now. Now I will also planning to cover 100 km.

  7. Check, check and check. Doing my first 💯 KM ride tomorrow. Just checked everything but the tubes off the list. Will pick up tubes 20km into the ride. Bit last minute, I know. Ah well, next time.

  8. I started working as a Wolt food deliverer. Made 125km yesterday 😂 my legs hurt so much, not knees and calves, but quads area, how do I get rid of pain?

  9. After finally cycling 100km for the first time (yesterday) I can confidently say it was a bad idea to forget the sunscreen before going into the sun for 5 hours.

  10. Did my first 100k today, averaged at 28.5km/h and brought two 750ml bottles of water and 2 bananas and one ladyfinger, didn’t even finish one of the bananas and only stopped for 20min at the 60km mark, i feel great and can’t wait to go for similar rides

  11. My first ever road ride was 104km 1300 odd meter elevation, my brother threw me in deep end did it on 2 energy bars a sausage roll and San peligrino stop and two full bottles fluid! I learnt a lot that day about cycling and myself, haha bonk realm though 😅

  12. I always take a knife. Really helps if you get a flat and need to get the old tube untangled from the hub or you get some debris from the road stuck in your chain.

  13. I will ALWAYS take a healthy dose of EPO and cocaine, also some Insulin and Anabolic Steroids, Oxabolone, and then Nandrolone, substantial amounts of Norethandorlene and Furazabol. I keep a few bumps of heroin in my frame bag. Then also Letrozole, Cyclazadone, some Estrogen Receptor Modulators, Raaloxifene and Tamoxifen to ward off breast growth. A lot of Oxycodone. Phentermine, as well as, Ortemamine, Bunolol, Lobatealol. Plus, as per usual I've hopped some Ethanol and taken a couple of MDMA tablets. I smoke some Crystal Meth and Crack then I freebase a Hormone from monkey testicles, vomit it up, then cook that down into a broth to drink on the ride. I also eat at least one sandwich from Arby's.
