Yesterday Google maps sent my Brompton and me through a horrible big gravel and stone path. After it and riding a bit more on good asfalt my pedals locked. It took me some time to understand what was going on: the hinge screw was rubbing against the chainring and finally locking it.

I'm carrying my Brompton as a last mile(s) solution while driving a van through not so well served areas. So I did a quick fix with pliers and will be careful with it until I can service it properly.

Questions: provided I'm careful not to get into bad paths and monitor the it, is it reasonably safe? Is there something else I can do with few tools/materials?

The bicycle is newish, 3+ years, I ride it quite a bit and I weight around 80 kg.

  1. Put a drop of loctite blue threadlocker on the screw and you should be good for a long time.

    **Stop riding immediately.**

You need to take the crank off so you have full access to that screw. Take the screw out and give it a good clean.

You then need some threadlocker like Loctite 222. Apply some to the screw and screw it back in. You’ll ideally need a torque wrench and tighten to 13Nm. Leave it so the threadlocker can fully cure over 24hrs.
