I thought I would share this. For a while I was riding enough miles that I was having to clean my drive train once or twice a week and wanted to be as quick as possible with the process without creating a mess.

I really did not find a good solution to clean between the gears and other tight spots on the drive train after running the park tools chain cleaning tool. A cassette brush just pushed gunk around so you still had to either dump a ton of degreaser over the cassette + still leave crud behind, pipe cleaners got costly after a while +left lint, ad hoc solutions like a CD/credit card eventually failed due to the chemicals involves. This tool while not earth shattering lets me get into all the tight spots in less than 2 minutes and is efficient at removing crud vs. just pushing it around since it all goes into the shop rag.

So while it ain't rocket science…just regular science…I think…this does the trick for me because it works.

What do other DIY'ers use and does this looks like it could be useful to add in maintaining your ride?

  1. Finish Line makes a product called Gear Floss that I like for cassette cleaning. Great for phase 1 before applying any degreaser, flossing out the gunk. Could work on the inside of the FD too.
