This is the palace of the popes in Aignon. One of the largest and most important Gothic buildings in Europe. Built in the 14th century, it served as the residence of the popes during the Aignon papacy when the papal court moved from Rome to France. The palace is a fortress as much as a residence with massive walls, watchtowers, and grand ceremonial halls. Inside the vast chambers were once decorated with frescos, tapestries, and ornate furniture reflecting the immense power and wealth of the medieval papacy. Today, visitors can still feel the echo of an age when Avignin was the heart of the Catholic world. [Music]

  1. The narrator forgot to mention that there is one small room where the gorgeous medieval frescoes survived. It was, fortunately, walled off during the stationing of the troops in the palace – the ones who wrecked the rest of the interior — so they missed this gem.
