So my cassette driver (which had always been quite smooth —- bought the bike used) started to stutter or get stuck up when I would pedal backwards. I took it apart to take a look, but I don’t really know what I’m looking at here. It looks like a pretty good quality assembly, it was just a little dirty. I cleaned it up and it doesn’t seem to be getting stuck anymore, but I’m not sure I’ll know for sure until it’s reassembled.

Does it look healthy? The springs seem to be doing their job. I can’t tell if the splines have a wear down the middle of the teeth, or if that is by design? Just looking for some guidance. Finally, before re-assembling, should I put any kind of lube or grease in there?

Thanks!

  1. It looks fine, the pawls are propped up, spring is intact. All is good, nothing to worry about.

No need for grease, cassettes are fine dry like that.

  2. A drop of thin lube on the pawls. Push it in and spin the driver backwards and the pawls will go down and slip into the hub.
