ReTyre sent me these studded zip off “skins” along with a their smooth base tires. I’ve never tried anything like this before. They obviously have a very specific use case, and they’re heavy (it’s like running four tires instead of two) but they made for a fun time out on the ice and the quality seems to be exceptional. Do you think you would use these?

  1. This can be very dangerous. If youre going to try this even for fun, always take emergency items in case you run across a thin patch and fall through the ice. E.G. Whistle, Pick Axe, Inflateable Life Jacket, etc. Hypothermia would set in in about 30 minutes or less!

  2. Just change tires for the winter. There's nothing wrong with riding studs on asphalt/concrete. If you have harsh winters like these then there's no reason not to, if you have mild winters (Central/Southern Europe) just skip a few rides.
