Just spent 6 days completing the TranSardinia (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49230866). UNREAL experience. We brought mountain bikes, and I’m very glad we did. This would be a very uncomfortable slog on a gravel bike, as there are plenty of rocky, technical sections that are no-fall zones. We stayed in B&Bs along the way instead of camping, which let us meet and spend time with locals. Some even invited us back to their town next summer for their traveling party. Rural Sardinia is amazing – it’s like a miniature continent, filled with very welcoming people (but 0 English, so brush up on your Italian … or Spanish!). If you’re an archaeology nerd, you’ll LOVE the sites. There are too many on this island to see in a lifetime! Anyway, if you find yourself in France or Italy with a bike, do yourself a favor and catch an overnight ferry to Sardinia and head out to the mountains. You won’t regret it!
