I took my step son River to the biggest downhill and freeride MTB bike park in the UK! DYFI bike park has some massive jumps and scary lines, but it’s also super progressive. River was scared to ride there but we ended up having such an insane day riding downhill bikes nad doing tricks together flat out. Enjoy the POV, coaching and me getting him to send it hard on huge mountains.
Legends
This is my stepson, River. Hi. He’s 14. We’re going to put him to the test today. River’s fallen in love with mountain biking. He loves riding dirt jumps. He can back flip. We’ve taught him loads of stuff, but he’s never been to a proper downhill mountain bike park. This is Dovey Bike Park. The jumps are bigger. It’s faster. It’s more gnarly. And he’s riding my downhill bike or one of my downhill bikes. He’s got all the gear. Let’s see if he ends up with any idea. And also, today’s video is sponsored by Squarespace. From marketing tools to analytics. If you want to build a website, Squarespace is the platform for you to do so. You’re going to absolutely love it, mate. Yeah, we might not see a flip today, but we’re going to see a happy lad at the end of it. Go on. I’m not I’m I’ve got just got to watch you learn. You’re filming. Delete that. I’m just trying to watch you learn. You got to learn the hard way. We’ve all been there. Are you filming? Of course. The video is your experience at Duby Bike Park and that is part of the experience. We’ll also be filming lunch, toilet breaks, river, do you want to go right or left? Right. his triple black diamond fire in the booth. Left his single red diamond thirdderee BMS. I’ve never done that one. We’re going to baptize the river. Nice. Yeah, you like that. Yeah. Clever guy, ain’t he? He’s never ridden that bike once. Was last ridden at Darkfest. Don’t scratch it. Mario, do you want you filming this? The goggles. Come on, I’ll look after you. River, follow me. Can you follow me? I’m going to be so Yeah, that’s good, mate. Just roll. Go on. Yeah, I’ll follow you. Literally, you won’t have to pedal again now. to just chill. I’ve never done this, but apparently everything’s rollable. Yeah, boy. How’s the big rig? Yes. Right. That’s looking good. Look at the end of the BMS. Work out what’s coming. Little shark fin triple. I’ve never done this. This is class. What a run. Yes. River. Easy on the brakes. Yo, look at that line. Look at the end of the BMS. You’re killing it. This is perfect speed. Yes, Riv. Oh, it’s going to be one of those days. He’s going to get well excited. Whoa. You think we went ripping into that one? They’re insane. BS. Yes. River. Easy going too fast into turns. Yeah. That’s good speed. Yeah, that’s it. Make sure you’re looking out the corner. Look out the corner. It’s well slick, mate. You’re flying. That’s real slippery, man. Woo! Yo, relax, relax. He’s a beast. This is proof that ignorance is bliss. This is death road. You’re good. Look at him speed tucking like a Maverick. Yeah, boy. That’s it. I’m so sorry. Now you’re all good. Little drop coming up. Just pop off it. Yeah, bro. Nice. Play, mate. That was so scary. Pretty wild first run. How slippery were those BMS? I didn’t really tell. Did you not feel it? All right. I couldn’t quite feel. You actually weren’t, mate. You were hauling. That’s like one style of track here. There’s a lot of tracks that just have tons of corners and you get quite good at corners fast. But there’s also some flatout jump tracks. On that last run, I thought I was going to die. Well, the one where I screamed. Yeah, there’s like a cliff behind it. Yeah. But that’s just proof if you know you’re not you’re not out your comfort zone. You just don’t know where you’re going. and then just hump it up. Oh, I was scared if you could give one handed. I wasn’t trying to. I’m literally being helpful. I want to get my bike on. We have We getting through like a dozen cream eggs in pancakes now. Thank you so much. That’s my bike. Yours is still on. Did you film that? Still going, mate. It’s all part of the day out. People want to see what it’s really like. Oh no. Go on. You done it, Bosch. Here we go. Back to hell. Right. River run two turns in the fern. Still a half mountain. We’re going to up to the top after this. It’s just break in a straight line. Have fun. Flying. Right. That’s it. Yeah, you’re killing it, mate. It gets a bit steeper here. Look out the corner. Yes, lad. Nice and steep now. Stay in the rut. He didn’t see that go. Yes, boy. Now that was cool. No, you made the right call. Roll this one, too. Little drop. Yeah, boy. Right. Big drop. Another one of them. Yes. And then break a little bit. Little tabletop. Nice, mate. Yeah, boy. We’ll stop at the junction e. Yeah. Go on, Brandon. Sorry. I want a bit of speed and then I’m back to coaching. Oh, it’s a bit too much speed. Oh, I’ve never done that. Yeah, boy. I’ve never done that. Big pull. Oh, it’s cool, eh? Cheers. Wow, daddy. He’s well fast. I thought I was going to have to walk up and guide you through that. So good. Yeah, boy. We’re about to go under the road. Yeah. Through a concrete pipe and then into a table, right? It’s like a step on step off thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, boy. On now. Off. Yeah, boy. Lovely. Hitting it blind. push through this. It’s hard to clear. That’s fine. That’s normal. So sick. I love Yeah. You’re loving it. I love your ability to like deal with stuff last minute like that on off. Never seen it before. You just trust yourself. It’s brilliant. So much confidence. Right. Let’s go all the way to the top. You did so sick that run again. You got this riv. It’s nice. Ow. Got a rock to the shin. Yeah, boy. Just hucked onto a huge boulder. Nice bit of break. Let it run. Yo, that was That was nuts. Try and put your knees apart a bit. You got your knees really close together. That’s it. You have a bit more control. I’m bad for it as well. Yes. Nice. Rip this one. Full speed. Full speed. Full speed. Yeah. This is sick. Nice tabletop coming up. You’ll be all right. Yeah, dude. Yeah, I think we’ll do a swooper. I’m going to have a look down here with these. Is this 50 hits? Yeah. River could probably do 50 as well. You want to just do it? Go on. Most of them are tables, mate. I’ll shout if anything looks like a problem. Nice. Yes, dude. Yeah, that was a sick burn. Oh, no. You’re all right, Will. That was the longest crash in the world. That was long. That was so slippery. It’s that gold chain. Once you put it down, you can’t pick it back up. That’s it, R. Woo. Keep going. Perfect. Yes, mate. Just keep this going. This is spot on. Spot on. Speed tuck. Nice, bro. Another straight one. Keep the speed. Keep the speed. Get that bit of a flat section and then we’re going to have more. Nice. Keep the speed again. Yo, so far so good. I just wanted to remind you guys that this video is sponsored by Squarespace, which is just the ultimate platform to build your own website. And I’m here to help as well. Yeah, lad. Couple more tables. And again. Yes, dude. Keep the speed. It’s a wall ride. Keep it up. We’re almost at the finish. Let’s just roll. So, we’ll do the onoff again. Yeah. Then after the onoff, there’s a little road jump which you already did. Yeah. BM. Yeah. Remember that table we case? Yeah. Flat out for that. Yeah, boy. On off coming. Push through. I keep the speed. Rail the bum. Spot off this. Push down and now jump. Yeah, mate. That as good as it’ll get. That was perfect. Left B. Uhoh. He’s going fast. Going fast. Whoa. We’re back at the top. We’re going to ride the Insta 360 line. And I think for River to get the most out of today, what we should do is now repeat, repeat, repeat the same track. So you can fine-tune it, learn where the landings are, learn where the drops are. And this run allows us to do the big step up, which I always come here and like we often do back flips on and stuff. You’ll like that. And old train line, which has got some really big jumps. That’s always my advice, like find a track you like and just repeat it. And we are filming on an Insta 360 XPro 2. Huh? Hey, goggles. Yeah, good. Cool. You’re better than you think. Yes, boy. See? Killing it. Woohoo. Right, slow down a bit. This is all rollable. Do little lift. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Yo, look at those forks. Just case this that table you have your speed has to come from a kilometer away to clear that. It’s impossible. Can you enjoy tonight? Yeah. Look way ahead. Yeah, boy. Ignorance is so bliss, especially at that age. Just cracking on. Really nice. Big route. That was good round that turn, bro. Nice. More rocks coming. Here comes the drop. Just put a pedal in and cruise off it, mate. Little lift. There you go. sorted. Do you want to just ride down and jump it onto the top with me? How fast do I have to go for that? Not very. There’s a jump on the right as well. How much speed do I need? Like as much as I can get. No way. Most people roll from here. And then just pump it. Even that’s too fast. That’ll probably You straight on. Yeah. On the roller and then all the way out and then you do a little turn. I’ll go down and stand on it. Sweet. I’m gonna follow you. I just literally put one crank in, bro. Roll. Here he comes. Yeah, that’s easy. Turn fast. Yes. Mint. You couldn’t have got that any better, mate. Yeah, Meg. Oh my god, dude. For a first run of that, you couldn’t have got that any better. I know. Like your speed was sick. And this is um the old train line. Just be careful cuz they’re quite short. I’ll shout um chill when it’s an overshooty one. He was so good at that step up. That was massive. Good. Keep going. Just hit the chill ones, bro. Nice. Chill for this one. Yeah, boy. Right. Got a left turn coming up. Keep your speed. Stay off the brakes. Stay off the brakes. Stay off the brakes. Full speed. Yes. Pull up. Pull up again. Yeah. river. Go for it, bro. Get it. Get it. Get it, mate. As if you got them all first go. No way. I thought we’d be hiking up and down there for the next hour for you to get them. We’re going to roll down here. There’s a step up with a real flat landing. Here’s the step up. Pull up. Oh gosh. Oh my god. Are you all right? Are you all right? Yeah. Oh my god. Are you all right? I punched you in the back. You got your armor on. You good? Yeah. Sorry. You actually had mad speed for that. I don’t know why where the speed went. Look at the weight difference. Yeah. Whenever I’m following you, I can’t decide whether to jump the jump behind you. Yeah. Cuz once I leave the ground, I can’t stop. You have built my confidence in the fact that you clear most jumps. But that one was that one was carnage. You know, I said we should repeat stuff loads. I wasn’t expecting River to clear the step up that you greased, the big one that I flipped. I wasn’t expecting you to do the big tables that Brighton cased. Yes. And I wasn’t expecting to pile drive into the back of you. So rather than repeat that, cuz you already nailed the whole thing, let’s go and do Oakley line, the biggest jump line here. Some of the biggest jumps in the UK. Can he do it? Can he jump it? Did you manage to put your bike on yourself that time? No. That’s the true goal today. Is it as hard as everyone says? No. No one says it’s hard. Do they? I can understand someone saying it’s crazy. Yeah. Or scary. Does anyone say it’s hard? I don’t know. Big is not more difficult. Honestly, there. This is one of the best built lines here. Yeah. So, the likelihood of you getting it nailed is is huge cuz you will land on the landing. And if you land on the landing, you will clear the next jump. Yeah. That’s my belief. Two little drops and two tables. Roll to the edge of that drop. So, we’ll do that one. Yeah. Which is chill. It’s actually landing’s quite a weird shape. And then we’ll look at that one in a minute. Disgusting. This one’s all right. What? Just the shape of the landing? Yeah. Well, you’ll go way past that. That’s fine. Oh, no. It’s actually really smooth. Yeah, it’s so smooth. And then if off the big one, the corner is even easier cuz you’re more over. I don’t know about this one to compare. Too big. It’s like I could do it, but it just seems so big. Focus on the I could do it part. Get it, Riv. Yeah, bro. Yes, River. This is the shortest drop you’ll have ever done. What? Oh, no. It’s almost impossible to case, but there are case marks. Jamie did this. This one’s scary. I don’t know. I’m I’m actually scared for this one. Yeah. Well, you can’t mess it up cuz this one feels like I go too fast. Nah, you’ll just survive. How fast do I go? I don’t want to show you and then not be up here to talk you through it. One pedal, two chill pedals. I’d rather you land halfway down the landing than case it. Here we go. Look, look how slow he’s going. Oh, he’s he’s stopped. That’s why. It’s not fun one, is it? Literally like two chill. It’s just like going for a bike ride. So, that’s all right. Lift it up. Well, I’m coming up and then another crank, but Well, yeah, you’d have finished that last pedal. Yeah, that would work. I think you’d land two foot down. That’s it. Another pedal. Yeah, you’re perfect. I’m so scared. You’re never going to have drops where you can see the landing, mate. Drops are just blind. Yeah. So, Oh, let’s do it. Very good, bro. Yeah. Rev. I’m so scary. Good lad. Yeah, I’m glad you did it. You’d have hated walking away from that. Hit the middle line on everything. Whoa. That one’s fast, isn’t it? Next time we’re going to do the bigger lip here. Yeah, cuz it’s it’s a better jump. Look, it’s shorter. It’s more stepped up and it opens you up for the burm. Right. Bam. Yeah, bro. Sick, mate. Right. And now there’s one more straight to go. So out of that right BM. And when we do the full run, you’ll be jumping all of this. It’s fast. Right BM. There’s a tabletop and then a huge lip on the right. Don’t do the huge lip on the right and you’ll be fine. All right. It’s just tabletops again. More tables. Yeah, boy. Right. For a 14-year-old, that was a good first run down cuz you did the two drops. So scary. And when we start not casing the jumps, it’ll actually feel nice. You know, you know, you know that one with a massive lip. Isn’t that massive? Huge. Yeah, the air time’s Yeah, it hurts to land. So scary. Back to the top. I’m stoked she got the drops. We got one more. We’re not supposed to say one more run, but we got another run. Uh that was last uplift. It’s been quite busy today, so we didn’t get We actually got loads of riding in do, but there’s just too much to show you in one day. Like Dove is a culture. You need to come here like a good few times a year, even two or three times a year, and the progression will be off the charts. Like it really is a springboard, a launch ramp for doing great things on mountain bikes, especially big bikes. So, you smashed it, mate. But we want to get Oakley done. Let’s see how much we can link together. Compared to what we thought we were going to get done together driving here, it has been like a triumph watching River ride a downhill bike properly for the first time at a brand new bike park. Ticking off features over and over again. Sorry, I drove into the back of you. Yeah. Right. Oakley line. Let’s do this. I think it’s important for you to follow someone now so I can control your speed and like go slow where you need to go slow. You can be pinned where you need to be pinned. So, I’m not going to be able to shout at you the whole way. Right. Ready, dude? Yep. Just relax. Yeah. Here we go. Oakley line just roll off it. Yeah. Oh, so big and case. Going full speed. No. Do you want to carry on? Yeah. Go on then. Well, yeah, boy. chill. Oh man. Yes. Hey. Oh no. Oh no. Pop it. [Music] Fair play to me. Yeah, boy. Yes, thank you. You stoked? Yeah. Oh, that last one I did do the bounce. Oh, you got you. Yeah, you go miles. Yeah, I got you. Feel the same fear. Yes, lad. Sick bike park, isn’t it? Yeah. Oh, if you watch the me on the small, you know, the small Oakley, like the proper Yeah. Yeah. My head goes like Niles. Yeah. Oh. Oh, sorry. Yes. Sick day, mate. Yeah. Legends.

Lads! I could go on for ages why I think this is the best MTB YT video this year (and believe me, I watch a LOT!). Such a great video. River is great on a bike; you can see his natural ability by the bucket load.
And I take my hat off to you, Matt, for giving him the time and energy he truly deserves.
I don't for a second believe it's lost on River how lucky and fortunate he is to find himself in the situation he's in.
Around the 26-minute mark, you both pull over, and he says "Thank you." I'll be honest, it made me a little emotional as you could tell it wasn't just manners; it was because he truly meant it. 🤜🏼🤛🏽

Loving the River cam. Need to get him narrating his thoughts while riding. It would be interesting hearing his thoughts as a 14 year old riding with the guy with a Red Bull helmet.
