Hey y’all, I’m having trouble diagnosing this issue. Randomly after a short, easy ride I noticed that my chain had literally no tension. It seems that the derailleur has literally no tension on the chain, and is not in the right position. I believe it’s some kind of issues with the springs?

The derailleur stays in this forward position no matter the gear I’m in. Any diagnosis?

  1. If it happened while you were riding it’s not your fault. I bet the spring/clutch let go.

  2. Most likely the spring in the P-knuckle (where the cage pivots) has either broken or dislodged, or the part where the spring attaches, or the catch pin that prevents the cage from unwinding, which is what normally pulls the pulley cage backwards and tensions the chain.

It may be reparable by disassembling and seeing if the mechanism holding the spring under tension is broken or if it just needs to be reinstalled. If you’re mechanically inclined you can do this yourself, but if you’re not able to, a local shop will probably just recommend a new derailleur as their hourly rate to repair it may be more than the cost of replacing the derailleur

This video shows the entire cage replacement which you may not need a new cage if yours isn’t broken, but it will shows the process
