Hi, I'm looking into getting my first tri bike after doing my first 70.3 last year. I'm considering another 70.3 or potentially a full ironman if the winter training goes well enough.

The two bikes are available on Marketplace and I've tried doing my own research and not finding a lot on whether these would be good for a first time tri-bike. Both will be a step up from the gravel bike with aero bars from before. As much as I'd love a new tri bike with disc brakes, I'm trying to be realistic about starting small before investing too much. I expect to do most of the training indoors over the next few months before taking it out. Also planning to get it tuned up or fitted to me as needed.

The first is a 2008 Cervelo P2-SL for $500 and the second is a 2012 Cervelo P1 for $600. Both have been available for a little while so likely negotiable. There is one dent on the P2-SL also included.

Any advice would be helpful.

  1. This is a good example of not needing something that’s very likely worse than what you’re currently riding just because it’s a “tri bike”.

If this is what you can afford and this is what’s available for the price, do not bother.

First bike is worth $0. Second bike is definitely not worth $600. Especially if you are riding indoors. I don’t think it makes sense to buy a tri-bike if you aren’t serious enough to get something halfway decent. Just buy a good road bike.
