A new 11 speed chain I installed last week was making a lot of noise especially on the big chainring. I adjusted the front/rear cables and derailleurs from scratch and the noise still continued. I have put 35k km on my chainring so I feared my big chainring had finally worn enough after a few years of riding in all types weather until I took a closer look at the rear derailleur once again. In the first picture you can see that the chain was routed outside of that little tab on the jockey cage which was definitely wrong and something I didn't know about despite having installed a couple new chains earlier. I did some searching and found someone else with the same issue, reinstalled my chain and routed it the correct way BEHIND that tab on the jockey cage like shown on the second picture and all the noise disappeared like magic. Learn from my mistake!!!
TLDR, routed a new chain incorrectly through the jockey cage making a ton of noise.

Everyone has their first time.
Happened to me the first time I put my new chain on after waxing it (my first waxed chain), and I was really puzzled as to why it was so noisy. I’d read that it can take some miles of riding for the wax to break in so I thought that might have been why, but after a few minutes I checked and saw the error of my ways.
Too late 🙄
Happened to me. Lesson learned: Don’t unpack and rebuild your bike in the dark! 😂
We’ve all done this at some point!
Too late! I’ve already done it twice!
I cleaned my chain the day before going out for an ultra distance race. I did the first 250km with the chain incorrectly routed ahaha
Wait. Is this incorrect? Oh shit. Well that must be part of my problem then…
