This is top tier r/xbiking material right here. I have a Hardrock from this era and I love it.

In the eyes of the bicycling world overall? It’s just an old bike. Outdated, primitive. The u-brake can be an issue.
To a small niche of people though (r/xbiking) these old Specialized models are very much in style and desirable right now.
If the price is right – and most importantly, it fits you well – go for it.

Very cool. A new stem would def make it look better but not necessary fs

I spent a few years on my grandpas old Carrera Podium steel frame that was bright red with a yellow eagle on it and got more compliments on it than I’ve ever had with my Tarmac now.
Total 90’s vintage cycling vibes man, people love it.

It’s a solid bike. It’s not the fastest, lightest, or most capable, but there’s no reason it shouldn’t serve you well. I do recommend you check out r/xbiking. Vintage MTBs like these are a common platform for custom builds (I’ve done a few myself) and this bike is cooler than some. IMO, though, it’s not especially cool, nor is it wack. It’s just a good, solid bike for getting around.

These bikes are cooler than modern bikes. Fight me.

Great first bike. This is the way. Ton of options, cheap parts, you can’t miss with this bike.

Remove the dork disk, put on a proper saddle and pedals, and you’ll be as bike hipster as it gets.

Who cares what other people think. Ride it and if it works for you then that’s all that matters. Ride on👍

If you are really concerned about what the bike community is going to think about you or your bike, then the first step would be to start from photographing it from the drive side. Cool ride.

Looks like it’d be a very nice first bike. Whatever kind of bike you do get, get several bike locks and be sure to use them. I had two bikes stolen in 2023 so I make sure to lock up mine with 4 or 5 locks.

If it shifts well, brakes well, and fits…it don’t matter. The fun is between your legs.

Older stuff is pretty popular in the area I ride in. Even a lot of the serious roadie’s and MTBers still find them cool.

Just post it on r/xbiking 😆

When you grow up, you will stop worrying about what others think. If you like the bike, that is all that matters.

It’s sick. I’d rock that bike in a heartbeat. Ditch the rack, consider a better seat, better pedals like shimano platform+spd combo. that paint job is rad especially with the matching bottle cages. They might be a pain in the ass for bottles, so if you decide to swap them for more modern cages I would try to find the matching colors.
I go back and forth on removing dork discs. A little insurance against your chain flying into spokes by some freak coincidence and the look doesn’t bother me on older bikes. I’ve left them on vintage bikes I use for getting around town.

I would change the saddle

I ride an old Stump Jumper and I don’t think anyone looks at me weird.
There lots of love for these old bike as far as I know.
This is a classic. Just saw a [video recently](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSKMsfXMRfI) on this model that you may find interesting.
