Anything can be done on a Brompton!

I just finished a fantastic bike tour of the Erie Canal, from Buffalo to Albany on my 4-speed P line. Lots of people doubted me (because the wheels are small??) But this proved it possible!

We finished at a previous stopping point earlier this year when I rode the bike up from NYC to almost-Albany.

A few things I would have appreciated knowing beforehand…

Most of the trail is stone dust, which means the tiny rocks can cut into your tire and slice up the tube. I rode on Continental tires but should have switched to Marathon tires and saved a lot of time 😂 that being said, bring some super glue to close up the pesky slices that the little sharp rocks wedge themselves into. The one picture shows my various field-fixes for tire punctures including a protein bar wrapper and a tire boot. My brommie even survived a wipeout when I hit a hole (possible groundhog hole?) while going around some trail maintanence.

Also, can't wait to upgrade to a 12-speed, because so many hills hit my gear limit. I hear there are upgrade kits, but I'm just not sure if that's worth it.

Can't wait to see what the next big trip is going to be.

That backpack holder, do people just use a wooden dowel or is there some sort of technique involved?

Also, how’s the camping on the canal?

That sounds like a brilliant adventure. The load on the back was just carried on the rack , supported by the wooden pole through the saddle rails ? – amazing 👏
