This is my project bike. Where I'm learning how to do shit with my hands. I also use this for my commute for work. So it needs to be rideable.

Today's topic is about my cassette and derailleur.
I bought an 11-50t 10s cassette. Installing on the hub went smoothly, getting the wheel back on not so much. Found a hanger adapter which came with the cassette, lowered the derailleur a little. But not low enough for the tallest gear. Ive adjusted the set screws so it won't want to shift into the tallest gear. Essentially I now have 9 speeds 11-42t, which is still better that the 11-36t. Is it fine to run like that until I get a long term solution?

As for the long term solution, 1, get a 11-42t cassette. Seems like a easiest fix. 2, get a derailleur that will fit the 50t, i read somewhere I could get a 12s derailleur that fits a 50t. But will that actually shift with my current shifter? 3, some other solution th you guys tell me?

  1. Do you need the 50T for commute? lol. Anyway, cheapest would be not to use the last gear. Next cheapest would be to buy a smaller cassette so you don’t need to upgrade anything else.

This looks like a M786 XT derailleur, which on paper can take up to 36T only. Most articles online say they can take a 42T on a 1x configuration. I think that’s the best way forward until you can find a good replacement that can actually take 50T. But to be honest, if you’re using it mostly for commute you’ll rarely touch the 50 tooth cog.
