Looking to get more into mtn biking. Came across this trek fuel ex8. Listed for $550. Is this a fair price? Quality bike? Pros cons anything helps. I rode it around the neighborhood fits me good. But I have no idea what to look for in a used bike. I also been taking to a bike shop about a cannondale trail2 which I think I like more but not $400 more. 😑

That’s a lot for the vintage of trek. Suspension is obsolete at this point, so servicing it will be tough. Find a nicer/newer hard tail
That Trek is a good condition but outdated bike. The geometry is poor and the components are old and likely difficult to service so will need replacing.
Your money is much better off spent on something that was produced since 2021/2 and there are plenty of bikes around for that.
If you are on a small/medium budget and not an experienced rider then a decent hardtail will do you much better than full suspension. Less expense, less maintenance, just as much or more fun, better learning curve and skill development.
Cannondale Trail2 should only be about $250 more ($799).
You will definitely like an updated bike for that little more investment, as you will get tired of this one and want to upgrade quickly. This bike isn’t worth upgrading.
Either way, this bike is not worth $550.
