Looking for a hybrid/commuter that I could also use to get around town and exercise. Area north of me is hilly but commute is flat.

Also I live in an area with thefts so might prefer something cheap so I don't feel so bad if it's stolen

Options are:

  • Marin Presidio 1 for $325
  • Marin Fairfax 2 for $380
  • Canondale H600 for $175

Should I try for something else entirely?

  1. So, the Cannondale is significantly cheaper, and it should be as it an older bike with some older technologies. That said, if it is in good shape and it fits you, there is no reason not to buy it if you want to save money. The two Marins are very similar bikes (the Presidio line replaced the Fairfax line). The Fairfax 2 might have a better drivetrain component set, as it was one step up in the line while the Presidio 1 was the entry level Presidio. But it is hard to say how much difference that might actually make without seeing the bikes up close and accounting for wear. If I had to choose just based on the pics and prices and nothing else, I’d probably go with the Presidio 1. In terms of riding up hills, the gearing on all three bikes will be similar, and all suitable for any inclines you are likely to encounter.

  2. 2023 Presidio 1 is pretty new but low end parts, limited gearing

2021 Fairfax 2 has wider gearing range for hills, higher end parts and hydraulic brakes, but aluminum fork will probably mean a harsher ride

The Cannondale looks like from 1995, was higher end in its day with midrange drivetrain and name brand wheels, still should be a good bike if in good shape. Also should have good gearing for hills.

  3. For commuting if you leave it in a place which is not safe then you pick the cheapest bike you can find, like old women city bike with rusted frame, sliced saddle with electrician tape on it, and buy something nicer for excercise.
