Dear team,

I've confused the f**k out of myself and require the sensible hive mind to clear things up.

I essentially have a 700 x 35c tire currently on the bike and am looking to replace with a 37c for a wider contact patch, more comfort at lower pressure.

Ordered a 700x 37c continental contact Urban but the displayed size on the tire wall is 622x 37 AND 700×35.

I assumed that the former refers to inflated width.

However, ordered a 700c x 40 for comparison and on the tire wall it quotes 622 x 40 and matches up.

Please advise if this is just a nomenclature issue.

  1. 700c and 622 are the same thing. ISO 622 refers to the bead seat diameter in mm. Metric 700c refers to the nominal diameter of the wheel/tire assembly in mm. So if you see 622-40 that is the same as 700c x 40mm. Some brands print one or the other. You might also see 29″, but that’s generally only used on MTB stuff.

  2. It’s just a nomenclature issue.

700c is a reference to an old french rim + tire combination. In order to never have problems with tire sizing again, pay only attention to ETRTO sizing (622mm is the rim diameter, 40mm is the tire width.)
