the bike has an 8-speed shifter, but a 7-speed freewheel in the back. it looks like the back wheel may have been replaced with a cheaper one (see the bolt-on axle in the back vs quick-release up front). the shifter will work, but you will have a “dead gear” at the end. if you have a bike co-op, you may be able to get an 8-speed wheel with a cassette for pretty cheap.
