It finally happened to me…full screw in the tyre. And I just had another flat 2 days ago!

What's the proper way to deal with a sizeable hole in the tyre (wtb horizon) casing?

Glue, inside patch with tape, one of those tubeless plugs? [I run tubes]. I also have something called "rubber seal" which is a sort of elastic black oypsealant…would that work?

Thanks for your input.

  1. Sidewall puncture is the big issue here. If you’re dead set on not buying another tire right now you should boot the tire with something. In the past I’ve used big stickers on tires (when I was a broke grad student and riding garbage tier tires in the winter). Definitely don’t expect it to be a permanent solution though but it can help in a pinch.

  2. Looks like it hit the sidewall so that makes it a lot more risky to fix.

The tread I recommend a bacon strip. I have used them and then run the tire to its wear limits. The sidewall is iffy. If it’s a small tear I had tried vulcanizing patches on the inside. Clean the surface well, let dry, use a rubber patch with the glue that comes with it. I would only try on a rear tire and monitor the first few rides.

  3. You can buy rubber tire boots for this, in the past over just used a few layers of gaffer/cloth tape on the inside.

  4. That tire has been made for a long time with many different names printed on the side, you can get those with the Giant brand name on there for like $25 apiece or cheaper than that online.

  5. A few layers of gorilla tape on the inside of the tire and minimal air pressure might hold it together for a few days till you can get a replacement. That screw is coming back out right next to the bead, and that hole is just going to tear in a hurry because that is the highest stress point of any tire.

  6. You have sidewall damage the only way to repair this is by buying a new tyre and letting a recycling plant repair that one into something new.

  7. While the proper repair may be to replace it, I would probably consider putting a rag or card just inside it and a new tube. I have had luck with cola bottles in particular for my card, but make sure you get all burrs of the edges of that card.

Take the tire off and look at how bad the sidewall puncture is. If it’s only a few strands, you can still run it with tubes after patching the inside of the tread. I’ve done this many times over the years. If it’s a cheap tire, I’d just replace it.
