So I was riding some jumps and there is a small/medium one as the first jump, did that one fine. I got to the second one which is literally a little hump in the ground before u get to the big one at the bottom, i went to jump this which I had done many times before and heard a snap. Thought a stick got stuck in my spokes as the pedals stopped spinning aswell as the back wheel, I almost fell off cos I lost control but when I finally stopped I looked and my derailer ended up like this, I can understand it happening if I crashed or fell off and landed on the derailer itself but I didn’t I just don’t understand how it happened. Of course I’m gonna have to buy a new derailer but if anyone has any ideas why it happened and how I can stop it happening again that would be great, thanks 👍

  1. Done got the beans above the frank.

Difficult to say exactly what caused it, but it’s likely that an impact caused the chain to either shift, jump, or bind.

  2. It looks like the chain got caught behind the lowest cassette gear. This could have happened with a bent derailleur hanger or improper low limit adjustment. Hopefully you can replace the hanger and RD without too much trouble.

  3. My guess is the chain came off at the bottom of the front ring, and the slack got jammed in the derailleur and it broke off. The long cage derailleur with a small range cassette makes me think that’s 2x or 3x driveline.

It might be time to go 1x with a wide range cassette and clutch type derailleur.

  4. time for a derailleur upgrade! springs on cheaper derailleurs are not strong enough to hold the chain tight as you launch off big jumps. plus if your chain is worn it creates even more play.

Looks like the chain skipped over the largest cassette gear – maybe the limit screw on the derailleur was not set right.
I had something similar, only without the derailleur coming off. The chain cut off half of my rear wheel spokes though.
Good luck on getting things fixed – ai ended up using the damage as an excuse to buy new wheels
