Hi all, I got this bike on a cycle-to-work leasing scheme. This includes a work shop allowance. Unfortunately, the bike seems to return in worse condition when I bring it in, each time.

The plastic cover of the STI hoods did fit snuggly before they bled the breaks.

IMO they have to fix it. Do you think I’m right? Or should I wait a few days and see if it will somehow regain it’s fit?

  1. Best guess: They pulled it back and left it like that for four days. Sounds pretty sloppy to me…

Complaint justified yes, but someone experienced can work it out and stretch it back into place

  3. its not just going to magically regain its fit.

spend 5 semi-careful minutes with a heat gun to get it a bit more snug. You could try a hair dryer on full blast but that might not get hot enough.

  4. You bring it back to the shop. If they can’t fix it they give you a new one and install it for free.

  5. Man i hate these hoods , fucking bleed port and cable port (if mechanical ) are under there and the minute you fold those bastards back they end up looking like a prolapsed butthole.

You can try spraying some alcohol on the inside and massaging them back into proper shape , sometimes it works

Grx hoodcovers also have this nobs wich you ned to press back in. most of them are at the points yours isnt fitting. try to pusch it in and look if it stais. i have this problem every time

  7. How else would you like them to bleed the brakes. Blame Shimano, not the shop if you have an issue with the strength of the hood returning to shape.

This is my opinion your natural oils in your hands are causing the silicone to swell! I have had to replace my sram hoods twice in 2 years. Silicone doesn’t like oily products causing hoods to swell not very common according to sram but at 38.00 a set it can be expensive.

GRX hood covers seem to do this easier than others. Second the heat gun suggestion. I just leave mine a little loose, and it doesn’t bother me much.

    Sweet baby cheeses.

Just ride the bike. Don’t go around it looking for faults.

  11. Hi bike shop, can you do some work under here without moving this bit please? Your complaint isn’t with the shop, it’s with Shimano. FYI, everything up to this point has made this happen, riding, using, weather, sweat… Not just the rolling back of it.

Firstly, it is now “worn”, it is just stretched.

Secondly, every time you work on the hoods, the cover needs to be pulled back. It does stretch and tend to look loose after being fitted back into the original location. But it usually gradually shrinks back to the original size and shape in a matter of day (maybe two or three).

So, my advice would be to fit that hood cover back into its intended place, properly engage all aligning notches and knobs, and then just wait for it to settle back into its normal shape and position.

Also, keep in mind that these covers with large front openings tend to look a bit loose even when they are new.

This is typically what happens after you bleed the brake and don’t bother to clean up any spilt oil off lever body. These hoods stretch out real easily and the oil only exacerbates that.

I get where you are coming from and I would feel the same way. Do you really want to take it back to the same shop? I have similar complaints about my local shop and will drive an extra 20 minutes to a shop that I like better.

  15. Make sure it’s seated properly then gently heat with a hair dryer or hot air gun and it will return to its original shape

  16. If you brought this back and complained we’d probably never stop laughing about it. Holy shit people find the craziest things to make issues of.

As others have said, fit the knobs into their slots and use a bit of alcohol and heat.

Hoods are a consumable component, as others have said every bit of their life leading up to this point has caused this to happen.

I hate when this sub gets used for Did My Shop Eff Up complaints. Even if dozens of people say, “No, this is normal,” they will zero in on the one person who agrees with them and use it as validation.

99% of bicycle mechanics are underpaid, hard working, honest folks. They aren’t trying to screw you over.

    Here’s the guidelines:

    1. If you think there’s something off, just ask the shop first. If something needs adjusting, or of they missed a small detail, they will simply fix it, no fuss.

    2. If they say it’s normal, believe them. They are the professionals.

    3. If you’re still not satisfied, go ask at a different shop.

A bunch of strangers on the internet are not going to know what’s going on with your bike better than a professional who has had their actual hands on it.
