I just got back from Italy (Gaiole in Chianti) where I rode L’Eroica. What an incredible experience. I took on the 106 km route with 2,000 m of climbing on my 1974(?) Sekine. My lowest gear was 39 × 28, which let me ride every hill (some just barely!).
If you ever want to be completely immersed in vintage cycling culture, make this event happen. For one day, you’re treated like royalty of the strade bianche, the white roads. The range of bikes and riders is amazing, from meticulous restorations to well-loved classics still earning their miles.
It’s a reminder that everyone’s path into vintage cycling is unique and that every story is valid. The only downside? Every ride after this one is going to feel a little less magical. 😉
