Hello all! I’d be grateful for some help deciding on a new, first bike for myself to ride around with kids in the neighborhood or a park, and occasional light recreational trail rides when I have some time on my own. I am unsure of what I am looking for so I’d be grateful for any guidance. Based on what I could read here and elsewhere I have shortlisted some offers in Marketplace as follows (they are all appropriately sized as L – I am 6 ft):

  1. Fuji Absolute 2.1 $300

  2. Trek FX1 iso4210, shimano ICS seat, 790×35 tires. $250

  3. Cannondale road bike (no model details otherwise). 56 cm. Brand new Michelin tires. $300 OBO.

  4. Cannondale Quick hybrid bike. New shifters and fresh grips. $150

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I tried to upload the picks in order of the list above.

They all look like they would be good for your use case. I would lean somewhat towards the Trek since it has disc brakes. The older of the two Cannondales looks like it has road bike geometry and very narrow tires, which might be less comfortable on shorter rides or rougher pavement.

The Trek FX all the way! It’s the perfect bike to do all you described. It’s both nimble and comfortable. It’s easy to maintain and find new parts. You can add baskets and racks and even tow kid trailers. The Trek FX series is synonymous with the all-around hybrid bike—it’s the obvious choice. (The Cannondale road bike looks like someone’s project bike—it also doesn’t look comfortable to ride at all).

If you like the tires, saddle, grips, and pedals on the Trek (or any bike) you can keep them, but those parts are fun and easy to replace yourself by watching “how-to” videos on YouTube.
