Day 3 of our bike-packing trip from Derby to Prague.
The longest day of the trip, 191 miles from the Netherlands into Germany. It was hard setting off in the pouring rain but we made the most of it and weer very grateful for the hour of sunshine we had and the post ride dinner!

Good morning. It’s day number three of a bike packing trip to Prague. And I’m not joking when I say I don’t think you can hear it on the camera, but the rain out there. I’ve just looked out the window. It looks like someone’s pouring a bucket of water from the sky. And the wind looks so bad. The trees are angles. Says 40 mph winds. The plan today is 193 mi and tomorrow 188 mi to get 600k in. We’d never normally do this. We’re seriously considering. We did think about a train, but we’re like, “No, come on. We’re thinking we cut today short, maybe do 130 to 140 miles, still a long way, and then do longer days the next two days when the weather doesn’t look as bad. So Kyle’s just having a look, aren’t you? Because it just looks it to be honest, it might even be unsafe out there to ride. I don’t want to risk really can’t see what it you can see the flags billowing and the blooming trees bending over. So yeah, we we’ll just have to start riding and see how it is because Yeah. But if it feels unsafe, like there’s no point risking anything. And this whole trip is about practicing for around the world. And when we go around the world, if it’s basically it’s storm, Amy, very ironically. Sorry, I’ve got my arm warmers and my neck warmer wrong cuz it’s really cold in here. Um, if we get situations like this, we will have to like change plans. So yeah, we don’t want to make ourselves ill by riding in like cold wind, rain. So although we are going to have to do that, if we’ve got the option to cut it short today, then then we will. So, we go through a few big cities. So, there was a chance to to stop and find somewhere. And worse worst case, like we’re not doing a record at the minute, so we could get on a train, but we’ll try try and ride. So, we’ll just see how it goes. Anyway, they’ve given us this breakfast pack. Is this normal in the Netherlands? Because I’m not joking you. What on earth is this? What on earth is this sandwich? Hang on. Can someone tell me if this is normal? Because apparently that’s a sandwich. K. Do you want this? It’s chocolate sprinkles. What? There is a cheese one that’s slightly more normal, but I’m just not sure what that is. Anyway, we’re going to get ready now and we’ve got no choice but to get out. So, wish us luck. Right, we’re back down in the bike lock up. And considering we got drenched just walking here about less than 100 meters, it’s definitely going to be a character building ride today. But we’re just going to see how far we get. There’s no pressure. We can stop early if we need to. It’s all about being safe. But yeah, it’s made me realize two things I need to add to the kit list for around the world. Waterproof head thing, like hat to go under my helmet and waterproof trousers for both of us, like really good ones. So, if anyone’s got any recommendations for good waterproof trousers and hats, then let us know. But yeah, it’s not it’s not feeling good. I said to you about waterproof trousers. Oh, I do have shoe covers to put on. Let me put my shoe covers on. Yes, I know. You already said to me about waterproof trousers. Well, you said it a bit too late. Kyle should have bought them now. For tour of France, you said I want them. Yeah, for tour of France, I didn’t want them cuz it’s too hot. But why? We are off and oh my goodness, it’s windy. It’s rainy. Just about warm enough with my layers on. I forgot to say where we are and where we’re going to. So we’re starting in Rouena in Netherlands. Today we’ll be going up a little bit like sort of northeasterly direction and then round into Germany down through Bremen if we get that far hopefully to where we’re staying tonight. But if not we might just stop in Bremen. Still be about 140 mi. But I’ve never ever been to Germany before. So excited to visit a new country. Not so excited about the weather. You probably can’t even see me right now. I look like a ghost. But we’re here. We’re doing it. Times like this remind myself of why we’re doing this. When we ride around the world, we want to raise at least £100,000 for mental health charity shout. So, it’s not meant to be easy. So, let’s do this. This is the heaviest rain I’ve ever ridden in in my life. Literally, I’ve got puddles like in just on my bib short just Oh, it’s horrible. 35 miles down. It’s light now, but it’s still absolutely tipping it down. But we’re not made of sugar paper, so we’re keeping on going. It’s pretty nice, but be a lot nicer if it wasn’t raining. Hey, mate. You all right? Have a little mate. Might as well get in the river. I’m not wet. We’re 50 miles in. It’s still very wet and rainy. Kyle’s just stopped for a week. We’re getting there, though. Nice cycle path, so can’t complain. Loving how cycling friendly it is around here. And we hopefully we should be heading towards Germany soon. Should be getting in there. So, not actually sure how far into our route Germany is, but shouldn’t be too much longer. So, new country here we come. Guten Dankern. That’s all I know. You all right, Kyle? Yeah. Come here. I’ll get it out for you. His hands are too cold to get his gel out. Tell you one thing’s for sure. There’s no rest for the wiki today. Kyle, no rest for the wiki. Wiki wiki wiki wiki. It’s not fun today. Yeah, it just it’s just like it’s not actually that cold, but obviously the rain on you, it just gets you cold. And my feet are wet. I’ve got shoe covers. I’ve got plastic bags in my shoes, but they’re doing nothing for me today. So, feet are wet, body’s wet. Actually, my body’s all right, but my head’s wet, my bum’s wet, everything’s wet, really. I’ve had drier baths, to be honest with you. My my voice is husky, I think, cuz I’ve not slept very well again. So, I’m running on low energy, low sleep, and wetness, to be honest. But, you know, no rest of the wiki, right? Come on, car. Let’s keep going cuz we’re going fast. know where you are. We’re less than 4k away from Germany. Kyle, practice your German. Guten to Guten. Guten to Dankern. Thank you and good morning. Or is it hello? I don’t I don’t know. Anyway, we’re nearly there. Hope the border control is not too scary. When we went through like when we did bike packing last year, went from Italy into France. Didn’t even check our passport. So, feel like it might be a bit more strict though. So, we’ll see. You hungry, Kyle? potato and egg for you there. That’s so random. When I videoed saying we’re 4K away from Germany, we were already in Germany. We just didn’t realize there wasn’t a border or anything. And I was like, “Surely we’re in Germany now.” I zoomed out of my garden. I was like, “Oh yeah, I can see the borderline.” There was actually nothing. No flag, no sign, nothing. I was hoping for a little German flag dance, but you know, instead of a top of the hill dance, I was going to do entering a new country dance, but we’re in here now, so we just got to keep riding. Yeah, I thought there’d at least be like a little welcome sign or something, but oh well. Germany are also a fan of the paving stone streets. It’s a nice street though, Kyle, isn’t it? I think we’re in Leah now. Leah, this is where we’re going to be staying when we do around the world. So, this is like the end of a day. Newberg. More like no rain. Thank you. Oh, it’s chucking it down again. 75 miles down. Hello, sheepy. This is real rain. Having a free shower right now. Ain’t that nice? currently on a detour because of the closed road. So, we’re hoping that this is going to lead us back the way we need to go. But we’re really hoping. A pine cone, in the words of Sid the Sloth. We’re keeping on going. 95 mi down now. Still raining. Lots of acorns off the trees, which are a little bit annoying. But at least when we do this, it’ll probably be May when we’re doing this part of our route around the world. The acorns will still be on the trees. So, they can stay there, please. Kyle, you okay? You okay? Does someone need a hug? 103 miles down. Kyle’s just having a quick gel gel stop. Look at my legs. Oh, now that is literally not even been off road. That’s just the roads. boat. I’m all a mess. Oh well, nothing a shower won’t help me later. Does someone need a hug? Right, let’s go. Woohoo! We got a tiny bit of sunshine. Come on, son. Stay with us. Oh, my hands are so wrinkled and cold that um can’t really hold the camera very well. But there’s a bit of blue sky over there as well. So, come on. We want you. The bakery has answered our prayers. I’ve gone for a crumble looking thing, a lovely warm cob, a hot chocolate. Kyle’s got two cheese sandwiches. Look how picturesque it is. Very nice. Made it very He’s also got a pudding down here. Okay. And they don’t scrimp on the lattes in Germany. So, we’re happy with that. But yeah, it’s cold and it’s not that fun. But this might stop raining for one time of the whole day. It stopped raining. We come inside. Blue sky over there, Kyle. You never know. Might be in luck after this. Nora, get this down and get back on again. We got 73 miles to go. Right, the eggs are in there as you can see. Bread’s in here. Peppers in here. That will close up. And dark chocolate’s in there. And Kyle’s got the cheese in his bikes. Look. Oh my jeez. Look at the bikes. Kyle, look at this. Oh. Oh no. Oh no. I don’t like looking at that. No good idea. Oh, it’s really cold and we’ve still got 72 miles to do. Come on. We can do it. We can do it. We can do it. Pass. That’s wrong on so many levels. You’re eating cola bottles out of your doing my jacket. Oh, we’ve got a tiny bit of sun. Although it’s very windy. Woohoo! Oh, I can’t tell you how good that feels, that sun. That is so nice. Appreciate it a lot more when you’ve been wet all day. But yeah, hopefully it will uh stay with us for a little bit. That’ll be nice. Oh, a thatched roof. It’s cute. All I can say is we’ve got free rain in a minute to go whipping over there. Hey, look. That side’s quicker than that side. Look, going down. I’m a bit scared now. What happens if we go over and it starts going up or midway? Imagine that. I don’t think it’ll work like that. Imagine if you started going over and then I’m pretty sure working that tower. Someone hacked into the electronics of it and they thought, “Oh, Amy and Carl want to whip them off.” So, it went up when you were going up there and you freewheel back down again. Wick them off. Whick them off. Yeah. No rest of whisies. Oh yes, time to go. Hey, right. Oh, well, at least we know cuz this was actually a bit I saw on the round the world route and I thought, “Oh, I hope that bridge is open.” So, at least we know now. It’s 8 till 7 till 8 it’s open when you come around. Not 1 hour. No. 7:00 in the morning. There’s that boat we thought was coming through. Thanks, mate. There’s the boat over there, Kyle. It’s not coming through. It’s gone that way. I don’t think that boat would fit through that little gap anyway. Dhip carrier. It says, “Oh, that was a fun experience.” Oh, no. I think the rain’s coming back. Hey, sheepy. German sheep. Hello, Gen. Hello, little donkey. Aw, not a real one, but it will do. Oh, that wind. Kyle V barge. We won. We’re going faster than the boat. No, they don’t go. They don’t measure them in miles now. Anyway, they’re measuring knots. I know that. I’m in knots after today. Not only that, also it’s probably a speed restriction. My shoulders are in knots, I tell you that. They’re aching. [Music] We just got drenched again and we went through the outskirts. Is it Brennan? Breman, Kyle. Breeman. Raymond. That wasn’t too fun. But we’re just looking over there and thinking, please don’t come this way. I only know. We can’t take anymore. I only know the name of it. The football team. Football. Yeah. Very. He’s just And I’ve got a nose bleed again. My nose just bleeding constantly now. So, just trying to keep it at bay. But we’ve got about 40 miles to go. It’s going to be a late finish. We’ve had a slow day, but a lot of cycle paths with cobble with paving stones and pine cones and all sorts in the way. So, we just said we’re doing the 600k today and tomorrow. So, going to keep going. We don’t care what time we finish. Should hopefully finish around 9 half 9. So, we’ve got dinner ready. So, in a bad straight on Kyle today. Yeah, we’ve not put up with all sedating to it short. We don’t cut it short easily. So, oh, please. If that rain comes, we’re going to be absolutely drenched. The wind’s not going that way, is it? I hope not. What’s behind us there? That doesn’t really hope not. Come on, just be nice to us to the end. I don’t think we’re moving as fast as the wind. We’re going to finish in the dark, but that’s okay. We finish in the dark quite a lot, so we’re not bothered about that. I’ve got my haries on. What? Yeah, a deer. I’ve never seen a deer that color. Oh. 15 miles to go. We’re getting there slowly but surely. Getting rained on again, but we’re used to it by now. Throwing it all up today. There she comes. What you got me? Right. Soon as we had an accident, aka we open my bag and all of the eggs have cracked apart from three. We decided we need some more. So spinning in. We’ve got 4K to go, Kyle. Chocolate milkshake recovery. Share half each. Hair for me. Popcorn for me. Hazelnut chocolate for you. Pepperoni pizza for you. Then for me, I’m going to use the rest of the eggs. I’m going to do like egg with rice. Mhm. And my favorite Kyle, mackerel. Oh, have eggs, rice, mackerel. I’ve got some tomato puree and peppers that hopefully lasted. So yeah, I’m going to have some good grub. Oh my pear. Oh goodness. Leave me pears. Some cold. I’m not sure how we’re going to carry all this, but we’ll make it work. Right. Pizza in toe, mackerel, tomato puree, chocolate, milkshake, rice in the front of the bibs, pear in the back, and K’s got the popcorn under there. So, we’re all good. Let’s go. I never thought I’d see the three miles left to go when I got out of bed this morning. But we’re nearly there. So, let’s do it. Oh, we are finally ding dang done. And I had a hot shower, but I’m still cold. We puff a jacket on. We’ve got dinner. Mine is a big pile of rice, fish, and tomato puri and pepper. Kyle’s got pepperoni pizza. Oh yeah. Feeling good. Honestly, this morning when we got out of bed and I heard look at my look at the state of me. Literally, this is what happened. This is not good for you. Um, when I got out of bed this morning and I heard that rain, I thought I honestly thought maybe we should just cut it short and do less miles today. But we powered on. Even when we started riding, I was close to being like, “Let’s get to 120, 140.” I can honestly say I’ve never been so drenched on a ride. We were riding for 13 hours and at least like 12 hours of that was in the rain. Ride stats for you, 191.3 miles. Elevation gain 768 ft. So very flat. But moving time, buming the saddle, 13 hours, 5 minutes, and 4 seconds. Average speed 14.6 mph. as I say, as drenched. To be honest, I’ve had I’ve had wetter I’ve had drier baths, but I think there’s one thing we need to bring out today that I bought for you, Kyle. So, I thought I was going to bring it out midbride, but I couldn’t be bothered to get out my bag. So, I thought, you know, too much effort for you. You might need this today because And yes, I am cutting my pizza with some scissors. It’s been a long tough day. And when I did to France, a lovely couple from Canadia got me this. Canadia from Canada. I think I’m a bit doolly. You know, I’m not all here. I need to eat. Lovely couple from Canada gave me this and I thought, do you know what, Kyle? It’s just what you need. I know what it is. An emotional support pickle. What’s it say on it again? It says emotional support pickle. I will always be around to let you know that you are a big deal. Look at it. That’s in my That’s been in my bag all day. I thought you might need that today after today. So, there you are. Thanks. You can give it a cuddle. Yeah. Anyway, we’ve got another big day tomorrow. So, we need to eat and get to bed. But I didn’t film much today because most of the day I was just so drenched. I thought if I get my camera out, it’s going to break. I said like someone might as well have just stood next to us and put a nose on. Yeah, they might as well. It was that bad. Poured water from the sky. It was to be honest. It was just relentless. I absolutely love mackerel. I’ve never felt so cold. No, I’ve been colder before. It wasn’t actually that. I’ve been definitely been colder. I don’t know if I have. I’ve been colder on that ride we did with Naj and everyone on the way back from Jim’s house in that winter last year. Remember? Yeah, that’s true. That was really cold. And I was cold at Gleno when we did Lenon Grapes. Yeah, that was cool. Anyway, going to go now. Thank you so much for watching. Tomorrow, still in Germany, but heading more Hanover. We’re going through Hanover tomorrow. East. We’ve got 181 mile 82 miles tomorrow. So 9 miles less than today, but still a very long day. So, we better cut the camera and hit the sack. Bye.

  1. I was thinking that looks pretty wet and the robbery must have been really annoying — the one where they stole your mudguards??!! 😉

  2. Having JUST listened to your chat with Matt Stephens, it made me wonder if you & Kyle have considered recording a few PODCASTS on your phone to post on YT during your worldwide challenge. At least you wouldn't have to edit video, since you won't have your laptop.

  3. I first started watching your vids a few years ago, and if I'm honest, I was watching to have a giggle at your accent and the way you speak. I subbed and kept watching..I bought a cheap Decathlon bike and started spinning and grinding all while catching up with you two. Fast forward to present day and your content is my food. You are both absolutely inspiring and watching you do nutty adventures in horrific conditions is an absolute joy. Your 'around the world' trip will be essential viewing for me and everyone that loves catching up with you. I'm based in Sardinia which has great cycling, if you ever make it over here I'd love to give you pizza and pasta recommendations x

  4. I've been using Decathlons BTWIN 100 waterproof trousers for years. I've cycled in the Welsh valleys in horrendous rain and they've kept me dry as a bone. They have the bonus of built in shoe covers and only cost 20 quid. They aren't exactly designed with aero in mind though.

The ultra bike racer Josh Ibbett swears by Albion's Zoa rain trousers, but they are not cheap. Actually, his YouTube channel is a great resource for ultra bike trip and kit advice. On his Ultrascape podcast he talks with/about people doing ultra events and round the world attempts.

  5. Well done guys. I've spent many a freezing cold wet winters day on the bike for far too long, and It ain't that much fun, but sometimes you have to endure nasty to acclimatise yourself to what you might face on your big day – you know, harden you up a bit. Caution though, there is a limit because you can make yourself ill if you can't get your core temperature back up quickly enough. The drop in core temperature eats into your immune system. Bring kit to keep your head and legs warm, and don't spare expense, or try to get a good bike clothing brand to sponser you. It makes a huge difference when the weather's rubbish. Loving it, and look forward to your next stage. Auf Wiedersehen. ("ow-ff veeder zay-en" "till we meet again). TTFN.

  6. Fenders on your bike, that helps more than any waterproof clothing. I'd say on a bike with no fenders you get at least 3 times as wet and also it's water from the street, so it's dirty, sandy, muddy water.
I know you're on sport-bikes, I have a sportbike myself that I transformed to daily rider, by putting on a normal steer and a couple of aluminium fenders. These alu fenders added only 400 grams of weight to the bike, but prevent mud thrown up across my back and into my face.

Ps. the sprinkles sandwich is normal, but I'd say that is the most minimalistic breakfast, even for a Dutch person. In a hotel I'd expect a much more elaborate breakfast, but hey you can peddle al day on a stack these 😀

  7. How do you manage to cycle with all that weight in your panniers and then you go shopping and add more weight to you and your bike good luck on your challenge around the world

  8. Wordl trip is realy cool idea 👍. Very good Waterproof Pens are Gorewear Lupra Gore-Tex.
When you arrive in Germany? Keep safe and good trip 👍👋

  9. Love the videos…. There are a lot of car washes in Germany with low pressure pressure washers with pure water ..That would be the quickest way to get your bike clean ( 1 € ) Where are you headed in Germany ? " Wunderbar !"

  10. Berghaus Deluge, best waterproof pants imo. What a great effort by both of you,12 hours cycling in heavy rain for 191 miles thats some going, keep spinning them legs 🚴🚴‍♀,i honestly thought you were going to sack it off but somehow i knew you wouldnt,💪,whoooooo hoooo.

  11. 11:25 the information shield. I love these Germans, how they address the general public "Liebe Bürgerinnen und liebe Bürger" it literally translates to "Lovely female-citizens and lovely male-citizens" after that the information statement. I think it's super sweet♥

  12. Around the Verden area the weather this may was so and so… A couple of top cycle days.😂 Dry and not that much wind. But some more days like u experienced. 😉 Wish both of u lotta luck with the weather here next may. 👍

  13. My hometown of Bremen ❤ They say it is not windy until the sheep on the dyke have no curls anymore 😆. Glad you got a tiny bit of sunshine. It is glorious in nice weather. Make sure to stop in Bremen next time x Amazing ride, you two are total machines! Chapeau!

  14. A tiny, stuffable backpack is a great way to handle overflow food. Pull it out when do a grocery run, typically at the end of a day, and you only have to carry it to your accommodation. Then it folds back up in to a tiny package when you aren't using it.

  15. Been out done 60 miles today, nice and dry if a little cool, was feeling quite tired until I watched you two. 190 Miles is 90 more than I would ever contemplate in a day (have done 130 before). Chapeau. Looking forward to following your round the world adventures. 👍

  16. Respect both off you, the rain and cold will drain your energy more then you might think. But keep up this spirit. Don't know when your trip around the world will start and how much gear you can carry on the bike. There are shoes that have gore-Tex and are winter proof up to temps -15C or more or Winter Rain Bike Boots Commuter from AGU these you can put over your shoes and are easier to pack.

  17. I know it is all about the cycling, but would be lovely to see more of the places you cycle through/en route…. That makes a great story and memories…
