Ze zet zich niet alleen beroepsmatig in voor duurzaamheid, maar voelt zich ook privé het meest op haar gemak in de buitenlucht. Als ze niet aan het trailrunnen is, geniet ze van een gezellige wandeling met haar gezin of een fietstocht. Ze laat ons haar beste tips voor Liechtenstein in de herfst zien.

Liechtenstein has a very high standard of living. It’s truly a country where you can live wonderfully as a family. In our series ‘In the mountains in search of’, this year we’re also going to the small Alpine country Liechtenstein. We’re heading out with a Dutch woman who shows us her personal highlights and tells us why she loves autumn so much. We’re visiting Michaela in Liechtenstein. I’ve lived in Liechtenstein for 13 years and I came here with my husband after our master’s degree in Sweden. We had just met and then he told me about his beautiful fruit trees. And I thought, well, that sounds like a lovely place for the summer. And I’m still here. Autumn is harvest season. We have large gardens and what I love is that I can harvest all kinds of things here in autumn. What I also love about autumn is that you can still hike in the mountains for a long time. Usually the snow doesn’t come until late November. My favorite hike is the Fürstensteig. It’s really something for experienced hikers. I only go there with people who really have hiking experience. First you start through the forest and then comes a hiking trail that’s steep along the rock wall. It’s always just wide enough, but it drops steeply down on the sides. And that gives spectacular views because of it. It’s just every time again a spectacular feeling. And after the Fürstensteig you basically go around the bend of the mountain and the landscape becomes green and gentle and you can follow the ridge to a small mountain peak, the Alpspitze. I love bringing regional specialties with me. That’s no coincidence, because I work in this sector. I’m committed to sustainable agriculture and food systems in Liechtenstein. So I live that out in my free time too. A summit always has something special. I always like to reach a summit during a hike. And the local belief is that you should tap the summit cross. It brings good luck. So I always do that faithfully. And of course, the view. It’s almost a bit like in the Netherlands. There you have that beautiful horizon. And you get that feeling in the mountains too, but only at the summit. What I really like about Liechtenstein is that it’s truly a country with urban flair. There’s a theater, a cinema, and all kinds of museums. And I personally love going to the art museum, for example. That really makes me feel at home. That you don’t just have a rural life, but also a touch of culture. Insider tip for Dutch visitors: Wednesday is free admission. Definitely worth a visit. I think Matu is brilliant for lunch. They serve delicious regional specialties and also wild herbs from nature. And it’s super cozy. Chäsknöpfli is the national dish. They make it really tasty and creative with lots of vegetables and beautifully decorated. The highlight of a mountain lunch is the dessert. Especially if it’s ice cream. A tip for families is definitely the Alpherzweg in Malbun. At the bus stop near the tourist office in Malbun you get a card in the shape of an “Alpherz”. You can stamp each station on it. It’s fun because the kids will start searching for the next post and walk ahead. There are ten interactive stations, posts along the way where you can do fun children’s activities. Fun children’s activities. If you’ve collected all the stamps you can go back to the tourist office and get a nice little gift. My kids are absolute nature lovers and they always find something tasty to eat. Or they want to learn the names of all the flowers. So you really enjoy the outdoor life here. Liechtenstein is also a great cycling country. Especially between the villages in the valley there are beautiful bike paths. You don’t even have to go uphill or downhill. Hey Michaela, I have one last question for you. Why should every Dutch person visit Liechtenstein at least once in autumn? Autumn is a really pleasant season here. Nice temperatures and all the outdoor sports activities can still be enjoyed. Hiking, cycling and of course just enjoying the beautiful colours.
