Hannover is the capital city of the German federal state of Lower Saxony.
It lies on the river Leine, in the north-western part of Germany, where the North German Plain starts to meet more hilly terrain to the south and west.
Population: around 550,000 to 600,000 in the city proper; the wider Hannover Region has more than 1 million.
History
First documented around the year 1100; it got city rights in 1241.
It was part of the Hanseatic trade network at some point.
Hannover was the seat of the Welf dynasty (Calenberg‐Celle line), and in 1714 the Elector of Hanover (George I) became King of Great Britain.
