Day 2 of our bike-packing trip from Derby to Prague.
We set off from home to the ferry in Hull, the ride will take us 6 days and we will be visiting Rouvy when we arrive. Day 2 is all in the Netherlands, we couldn’t believe how cycling friendly it was, although could have done without the wind!

Good morning. We have just Well, we’re not actually there yet, but we’re about to arrive in Rotterdam. We’re on the ferry. Car’s just getting ready. And today we’re cycling from Rotterdam to Ruenin. So, we’re in the Netherlands all day. We’re on day two of our bike packing trip to Prague where we’re going to go and see Ruby and we’re going to be practicing some of our round the world route, which we’re doing next year. Today, the first half of the ride is just us getting to the route and then the second half of the ride will actually be part of the route we’re going to be doing next year. So good to be practicing. Kylie, feeling ready. Yeah. You look like very, you know, kind of look like a really, I don’t know, like pro at the minute. You got a little hat on. Pro. I’m pro. You think you’re a pro? Give us a little team issue. He’s very impressed. He bought that off vintage, didn’t you? Your jacket. eBay. Actually, eBay. Let’s have a look at it. Give us a zip in your gut. Oh, don’t know that. [Music] Hello. Oh, no. They’re gone. It’s got a proper like co and stuff like that. Two small. Yeah. Epic rain jacket. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. All passengers are advised that due to costumes regulations, all gaming machines are about to be turned off. What? If you are playing on any of these machines, please collect your winnings now. Thank you. We’ll be all right. Don’t worry, we don’t gamble, mate. Fingers crossed it’s not going to rain on us. Although storm Amy is on the way. So towards the end of the day we could be facing 40 mph winds. But let’s hope that we don’t have that. Hello Rockad. We are off. Hello Holland. The Netherlands. It’s raining but we don’t care. We found where the ferry is. It’s about seven miles. So, heading there first and then joining our route. Yeah, it’s already windy. We’re in the land of the cyclists and the wind. It’s windy and the turbines. We made it to the ferry. Yeah. Camera. Yeah. Got to film the trip. Yes. The memories. Oh, thank you. Thank you. We made it on the ferry. We’re going to what is it called, Kyle? Mash. Mash. Mash. That right. Mash. Mashlaus. Mashlaus. That’s where the ferry goes. How long does it take? Few minutes. Only cost €240 for both of us. That’s crazy. Actually, it’s almost less than one when I looked on the website. Oh, is it less than a euro? Oh, they maybe charged us there then. They charged us 240. Yeah, but it should be less than a euro each apparently. They just saw us and thought they’ll pay more. Bikes are all good. Along we go. This is actually the same ferry we’ll be going across that we do around the world. So, it’s good to uh to practice. So, yeah. Didn’t expect to go on another ferry today, but here we are. Thanks to this fella for letting us know because I’ve planned our route from um Hook of Holland rather than where we actually docked. So silly ment. Oh my goodness. So we’re literally like 10 miles in and we’ve just come across this deer in the field down south time. They’re all protected in the field. Hello, mate. I’m more interested in the deer, mate. Cute. Hello. Oh, there’s a peacock over there. And like a walaby thing over there. They’re little ones. Little faces. A baby one. Bandage, aren’t they? Yeah, they are actually like they’re really cute. The spots are never seen. Goodbye, dear. I don’t actually know what goodbye is in Dutch. I wish I did. It’s the famous windmills of the Netherlands. Oh, went through a puddle. I love it. It’s so flat today as well. We’ve got less than 1,000 ft to climb. 800 ft. Look around. It looks flat. It does. It’s so flat. You can see it. It’s so flat. But it is so set up for cyclist so well. Like we’ve been on cycle paths the whole time so far. It’s great. Just had our second road closure and we’re only 11 miles in. So, we’re now having to divert round, which means we might be doing extra miles today. But oh well, nothing we can do about it. So, just got to keep going. Well, hello there, little fella. One thing they seem to be a big fan of here is paving stones. Lots of the roads are like paving stones, but not the most comfy to ride on, but not as bad as cobble, so it’s all right. I love all the little houses. They’re so cool. So different to the UK. And it’s so well set up for cyclists. I’ve never known anything like it. Every single car stops for you. There’s bike paths everywhere. It’s great. on my neck. If you live in one of these, you have to drive over a little bridge to get to your house. It’s like I’m a bit mesmerized actually. I’ve never ridden here before. Look, you have to go over a bridge to get to your grooming house. 48 miles down, about 95 to go. This is so good. Like, we’re literally on cycle path the whole time. Just feels so safe. No cars. It’s great. We have got a little bit of a headwind all day. It’s kind of like a cross headwind. So, not the easiest riding, but keeping positive. It’s so great. Everyone’s just so friendly. And we did find a cafe this morning, which is in about 35 miles time to stop at. And very soon, we’re going to be joining our around the world route because when we go around the world, we won’t do any of this route. We’ll be going up and around Amsterdam and then back down. So, we’ll be joining our official route soon and following that all the way to Prague. So, I’m excited to have a little test run. See how well I planned the route. Hopefully better than I did this morning. Starting in the wrong place. Riding our through the Netherlands. Pies on top. Nothing can stop us. Woo! Songs have already started. Kyle, how you feeling? I’m feeling good. Not feeling good about the songs, though. Well, you know, it’s a taste of what’s to come cuz when we go around the world, around the world. around the way. I’m enjoying it if I’m not feeling good actually. No, we both had a really bad night’s sleep on the ferry. So, we’re both not feeling that great, but hopefully we’ll get a good sleep tonight. And I reckon I got two to three hours. Yeah, it’s good practice though cuz when we do the world try and do the world record, we’re going to be tired. So, yeah, it’s not ideal, but we get on with it. Well, hello there fine stallions. And no, Kyle, I wasn’t talking to you. Although you are quite salient these days. Kyle’s just like, “Amy, go right. Go right. Go right.” Then he realized it’s the wrong way. He’s way back way back there. Oh god. Not clicked in. I was waiting for him. Where did you go? I waited at the proper route. You did not wait at the proper route. I did. Well, who got the bus away? Well, you’ve obviously disobeyed the law across the wrong point. I didn’t break the law. I just went straight on and turned right at the next bit instead of turning right immediately. I literally said three cars, you turn right. I know, but I can already see on my garment that if I carried on straight, it would be shorter. Gee whs going around people. Oh jeez. We’re in the land of the lead red light. Yeah, red light district. Lots of red lights. Literally every 100 meters of the red light. But you know, nothing we can do about it. You all right, Kyle? Kyle, I’ve just realized if you went 80 miles to the left, you’d be in the real red light district in Amsterdam. None of that today, my friend. Although we are going near Amsterdam. I’m around the world, but there’ll be none of that. Tell you that for sure. Mia, look at this Asian tuna. That is a bit of me. And Kyle Kyle’s got his uh Oh, we’ve got all our water bottles up. Thank you so much. All our water we’ve got for Yes. Thank you. Well, how do you say that in in uh Dutch? Water bottle. I’m not sure. Oh, you don’t know. Right. Okay. I’m Japanese. Okay, that’s fine. Okay. Thank you very much. Well, it’s kind of Japanese dinner. So, that cafe was so nice and we decided to stop because I don’t think we’re going to have time tomorrow or the next day because we’ve got two 300k days coming up. Anyway, bikes are ready. We’re ready. And we’re now, I was wrong before, it’s actually now that we’ve joined. We’re in um what where are we? Barn. Barn. B A R N. Anyway, I feel absolutely great now. I’ve had that. But honestly, I’ve not ridden for at least one mile without seeing another bike. It’s bike heaven around here. Kyle, are you full of energy again now? Yeah, all full of Don’t be a grumple stilt skin, please. Not been grumpy. Grumple Stiltskin. I haven’t been grumpy today. You haven’t been grumpy. Just been a bit quiet, bit somber, but you ready? You ready to go again now? Been a lot of wind. There has been a lot of wind actually. Very, very windy. But, you know, we’ll be all right. There’s still a back of mine. It’s going to let me ride. I know it is cold. Right. Let’s get going. Oh jeez. Saw M’s coming in and I can feel the headwind that easy. Jeez. Feels like I’m riding through trile. This flat day is meant to be the easy one. Oh, there’s no cells around here either. Go on, give us a rendition. AL’s coffee. It’s not sunny. No. Pepe is only in the sun. We’ve got a bit of sprinkling of rain, but it’s all right. Oh jeez, the wind doesn’t want to let up. Cut us some slack you, mate. Wish I was going that way. Tazzing along if you’re going that way. Right, I’m pushing. I’m doing like 200 watts and I’m only going at 13 miles an hour on a flat road. So, that tells you how windy it is. But you know, no wind’s going to get us down. We can do it. We got this. Come, give us a ring. Hey. Jeez, the wind. Oh my. Wa. This is called character building. Hello little fellas. Oh, they’re the smallest sheep I’ve ever seen. Hello. 100 miles down, 40 miles to go. It feels like such a long day. It’s not really that long compared to miles we normally do, but I think it’s a lot of stop start this morning, the ferry this morning. So, it’s just made it feel a lot longer, but we’re staying positive. Not long now. 40 miles. Yeah. Not much. Oh, this morning I didn’t think that 100 miles was ever going to come. I know. That must have been like the longest 100 miles ever. I know. It just feels like it’s gone on for so long. Like stop, start, diversion. Yeah. Late start. Yeah. Normally we’d start a lot earlier, but obviously we had no choice cuz the ferry didn’t dock until quart to 9. So wind. Yeah. What? We’re being positive. You go. Yeah. Kyle said, “As long as you’re pedaling, you’re moving forward.” So, that’s the thing to always remember. It doesn’t matter what time you get there. As long as you get there and get a decent sleep. That’s the issue. We want to make sure we get always try and get at least 7 hours. 8. If I can get eight, that’s great. But I think tonight I’ll be lucky for seven cuz we got an early start tomorrow. So, yeah. coming out of the army. I know 25 miles to go now. Today’s definitely taking it out of us, but the end is in sight. Oh, the wind won’t stop. Jeez. Hello, Sheepy. I wish I was you right now just chilling, eating grass. Instead, I’m doing this. Whose idea was this? That would be me. Just really wish we had a tailwind, but you can’t do anything about the weather, only your attitude. So, it’s got to make the most of it. It’s a privilege to be on our bikes. We’ve chosen to do this, so we can’t complain. 12 miles to go. Lights are on. It’s getting dark, but we’re nearly there. Oh, the wind’s just never ending. We’re just hoping for somewhere for dinner when we get there, cuz it’s not going to be It’s going to be 8:00 p.m. Right, let’s go. Car’s done his we and he’s ready to roll. Nearly there now, Kyle. Oh, look. Eat cafe. Yes, please. I’ll eat cafe. You probably can’t see me cuz it’s too dark. We have got got our lights on. Um, two miles to go. And boy, the wind today has just taken it out of me. I’m ready to devour a Chinese. I’ve had a look. It’s the only place that’s open. So, oh no, looks like we’re going to have to have a Chinese takeaway tonight and then hit the sack aka hit my bed because tell you one thing for sure, I’m Nikki Naki Nunard. Gee whiz, we’re nearly there and it’ll feel good when we get there and it’s all part of training for around the world and we’re doing that for a mental health charity. So, whenever it gets hard, I always remind myself of that. Right, we finally arrived at a hotel. Don’t worry, we’re not sleeping here. We are in the bike accommodation. Look at this. It’s great. Absolutely great. And they’re so lovely. When I checked in, she said, “Oh, I hope you’ve already eaten.” I said, “Don’t worry. We’ve just been to the Chinese and ordered it.” She said, “Oh, great.” Just taking my front camera off, put my light on. It’s only quart 8, but everywhere I played is really early. And she also said, “What time are you leaving in the morning?” I said, “We’re leaving at 6:00 a.m.” She’s like, “Oh.” Uh, I said, “Don’t worry about breakfast because it was too early.” And she said, “Oh, no. I’ll ring my boss and see if we can leave you some stuff out.” I was like, “You, my friend, are a keeper.” So, I was very happy about that. But anyway, it’s going to take long. This is taking quite long actually cuz I’m trying to get this thing off. It’s time to get up to the room, quick change, and hop on down to the Chinese. Ah, we’ve made it into the hotel room. And look at this. This is where you know it’s good. A little treat of nugar kyle. Soft nugar. Oh my god. Oh yeah. I’ll have that tonight after me Chinese. What’s this? Back end of paper towel. You what? Eat the back end of a horse at the minute. Eat the back end of my horse. Well, I’ll eat the back end off a Chinese. So, let’s go. Oh, I need to take my helmet off before we go there. Honestly, I’m just Nicki knackered now. I’m ready for some food and I’m ready for man nougat. But it’s nice little place. Oh, let’s see if there’s a toilet. Oh, yeah. Shower. Lovely. the automatic light rainfall. Right. I’m just happy to be here to be honest. But there’s I’m absolutely free. It is cold out there. Let’s go and get a Chinese. Thank heaven for that little Chinese because Carl’s got the goods and we’re ready to go and devour it in the hotel room. It’s cold now, isn’t it? I don’t think you realize how bad that rain is either. I know. We’ve been raining all day. I’ve literally walked from the hotel to here. Yeah. My hair on my face feels wet. Well, I’m not surprised car. That’s what rain tends to do, my friend. I know. It You didn’t feel that bad on the bike. Right, let’s get get back into this bad boy. Good advertisement for me. New Inos rain jacket. Yeah, didn’t get. And this jacket, I’ve got this Gortex one. It’s so good. Very warm in that. Very waterproof. But everywhere here, it’s a Friday night. Everywhere close to 8. Supermarket’s closed. Everyone’s Everyone’s going to bed. It’s pitch black. Maybe it’s haunted. Well, I like it. If I I’d love to live here because I’m normally in bed by half 8. is every place was like it though, wasn’t it? Everywhere. Everywhere I rode through from like 8:00 onwards. I mean, we finished at 4 8. But it’s And thank you. But um that’s a lovely man that stayed in our hotel. He’s English and he used to No, no, he’s No, he’s Dutch, but he speaks English and he used to be a pro cyclist. But um yeah, everywhere’s just shut. But like I say, that’s my way of life. Get up early, go to bed early, I say. Well, I’m whin and die nor in my version. I’m Chineseed and showered cuz I don’t drink wine. And I’m just back here with the ride stats for you from today. So, we did 143.4 miles, which is 230 km. And you’re never going to believe the elevation. 47 ft or 125 m. That’s the flattest ride I’ve done in my life. But my bum was in the saddle for 9 hours, 50 minutes, and 21 seconds. And our average speed was 14.6 miles an hour. Bearing in mind we’d normally average on a ride like that even with the bike bags probably 16 17 mph Kyle. Yeah. But today honestly headwind was really grinding my gullet. A lot of stop started. A lot of stop start at the start. A little ferry to go on. Sorry I’m belching. Um and at the minute I can hear rain battering against the window. And it’s not lightening my mood for tomorrow because on the menu tomorrow, we’ve got 193 miles to do. And I’m just looking at the forecast now. And I tell you what it says, 100% rain. Chance of precipitation 100%. That’s what it’s looking like. That looks really fun. and wind 43 mph gusts. Which direction in the morning against us, but then it does go with us. I think I hope it’s not against us in the morning. It is cuz it’s a different direction in the morning. It goes up. It’s actually with us. Is it? Yeah. Actually falls with us. Oh, thank God. It might be slight side wind at the at the second half. Anyway, that’s a problem for tomorrow. The only thing I’ve got to think about now is getting some shut eyee, some sleep, some catnip as I like to call it. So, thank you so much for watching. TT to the FN T for now. Goodbye. K. Would you like to add anything? Just I’m going to sleep. Goodbye.

  1. Funny seeing you ride over a bridge I pass all the time after watching you take on the magical Tour de France route. We may not have any cols but our headwinds are unmatched.

  2. Good ride, smart training for your 2026 challenge. I just listened to your interview w/ Matt Stephens; you did a great job. Hopefully you all get to ride together around Derby.

  3. Cycling through the Netherlands always gives me the same feeling each time. That this is what life could be like if we were not boneheads in Britain.

  4. The Netherlands is the land of (some of) my forebears! You saw the small sheep. You may also see small cows. It is a small country, so much of the livestock was bred smaller to fit in with what is available. Except for rabbits The rabbits were bred to be bigger, much bigger! Plenty of meat on them! Enjoy your ride, Prague is a lovely place to have as a destination, have a safe journey!!

  5. To add, the cobbled roads in urban areas are for making any road/services maintainence work easier. Small stretches can be lifted and laid back overnight, especially when using specialised machinery (look up Dutch road laying machines!!). Be sure to try some Chocomel along the way, best chocolate milk in the world!

  6. Headwinds… We call them the Dutch mountains! (But storm Amy was more than it usually is! Can be without any wind too, though) Know you're home by now, but Save travels!

  7. Sleep deprivation and a head wind, not the best way to start cycling in the Netherlands, cant wait for day 3,keep spinning them legs, 🚴‍♂🚴,whooooo hoooooo.

  8. I was in NL recently to cycle from Edam to Bergen op Zoom. The weather was wild! I used that ferry from Rozenberg to Maasluis. NL cycling is wonderful!

  9. Nice to ride in a storm named after you (not even a joke). The Netherlands may be flat, but there are a lot of windy days and mostly giving you a hard time to cycle against.
