Winter is drawing in. The rain has started. The temperatures have dropped, which means it’s getting close to that time of year again, where I get to talk about my favorite lake cycling shoe. This is the Lake 146 model, available in road and off-road versions for whichever cleat type you use. And these are a proper winter boot. So, if you are going to be riding in all weathers through the winter, this is the shoe for you. The reason I’ve spoken about this shoe so much over the last few years is that I think these are the best value for money upgrade that you can make to your winter riding. I got these shoes for myself a couple of years ago and they are without a doubt the best thing I’ve ever done. It has made me ride more through the winter because I know that I’ve got a pair of shoes that I can put on that’s going to keep my feet warm, keep my feet as dry as possible and stops me suffering with any cold, wet, numb type symptoms that you sometimes get on those long rides. So, what is it about these boots that makes these so good? Well, for me, the first thing was that I was fed up with putting on over shoes. It was faffy. you’re trying to get them on and they’re so tight and your fingers hurt putting them on. And then when you finish your ride, it’s all wet and muddy and you have to get it off again and it’s another thing to wash. With these shoes, with these boots, you do not need over shoes. The shoe is the over shoe and the shoe all in one. So, they’re dead easy to get on and off. Another good thing about these from a bike fit point of view is that they offer these shoes in both regular and wide fit. So, regardless of whether you’ve got standard width feet or wider feet, you’re probably going to find a width of shoe that is going to fit. Um, just a note on the sizing, you do normally have to size up at least one, maybe one and a half sizes from your normal lake cycling shoe size. Um, just because there’s a thicker lining in these to keep your feet nice and dry and warm. So, first of all, I’m going to talk about what makes these shoes so warm. And one of the biggest things that these shoes now come with is a winter insole where underneath the insole, it’s in this square pattern, so it traps the air underneath your foot, warms it up, and then you’ve got a nice toasty shoe for those colder rides. As well as the winter insole, you’ve got soft shell fabric that is also insulated. And then you’ve got this wraparound closure, which essentially creates like a double layer on top of your foot. So you’re heated from the bottom and the top with these shoes. So lakes say that these are temperature rated down to minus4° C and I can vouch for that and I have definitely used these shoes in those sorts of temperatures and still never felt the need for an extra layer or an overshoe. So we can definitely say they’re going to keep your feet warm. Now let’s talk about how water resistant they are. So this membrane on the outside of the shoe is waterproof. However, I don’t think you can ever say that a cycling shoe is fully waterproof because obviously there’s a big hole in the top there where water is going to trickle down your leg and get in and your feet are going to get a little bit wet in whatever shoe you use. But knowing that this material is waterproof, knowing that there’s no vents underneath for spray to go up into the sole of your shoe is very comforting knowing that your feet are going to be as dry as they can possibly be in wet conditions. The shoes are also treated with a DWR coating, which is the same stuff that all like hiking and outdoors gear is is treated with. So again, you know, that’s going to help the water bead off and keep it as waterproof as possible. So I can’t wrap this video up without showing you my favorite feature about these shoes. And quite simply, it’s just how easy they are to get on and off. Like I say, when you’re out on those cold, wet rides, the most annoying part is getting on over shoes. And then when you finish your ride, it’s having to fuff around getting your shoe off. Well, these are just so quick and easy. I’m going to show you now. So, the way that the shoe opens up is that it’s got a big old boa dial on the front. So, if you’re still wearing gloves, you can still grip it nice and easily. That just pulls up to uncip. And then you’ve got a Velcro upper over the top of that. It just pulls open. And you can see that that opens right up. So, it’s not hard to get your foot in like some boots can be. And then you can just slide your foot in like a normal shoe basically. And then wrap over the top, tighten your bow dial up like you normally would. And that’s it. And then for getting your shoe back off, this is by far and away the hardest bit normally with winter boots. But again, the way that this opens is so easy. You just uncip the bow dial, pull back the Velcro, and pull it off just like a normal shoe. There’s no fuffing around trying to get your foot deep out of a boot. It just comes off like a normal shoe. So, as you can see, I am quite weirdly passionate about these shoes. And if you want to get as passionate as me about these incredible winter boots, then head over to our online shop at ukbikefit.com or book in for a free shoe sizing where we’ll be able to size you up for some of these so you can ride through winter as warm and as dry as possible. Oh. Oh.
