ABOUT THE CAMINO PORTUGUESE
Walking or cycling the Portuguese Camino is an incredibly rewarding and meaningful experience. Whether you choose to walk the Camino Portuguese or cycle the Camino Portuguese, you will have an unforgettable tour all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
The Camino Portuguese is considered the more spiritually connected of all of the Camino routes to Santiago because Portugal is where the apostle St James, whose tomb is at Santiago Cathedral, first preached. Many believe that his final journey to Santiago was via Portugal when his bones were brought back from Jerusalem after he was beheaded.
The Camino Portuguese provides walkers and cyclists with a quieter, and flatter, experience. However, do not mistake the absence of travellers for a lack of interesting sights. The traditional Camino Portuguese route, the Portuguese Way, is beautiful and packed with history, taking you through World Heritage-listed Coimbra, Portugal’s early medieval capital famous for its 13th century university, and rural regions that you may otherwise never experience on a tour of Portugal.
There are various Camino Portuguese stages you can explore on a UTracks tour. On a cycling trip of the Portuguese Way, you can choose to cycle the stages from Lisbon to Porto; from Porto to Santiago; or cycle the full Portuguese Way route from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
If you choose to do a self guided walking tour of the Portuguese Way, also known as the Portuguese Road, you can walk the stages from Lisbon to Coimbra; from Coimbra to Porto; from Porto to Tui; from Tui to Santiago; or the full Portuguese Camino from Lisbon to Santiago in Spain.
Another option is the even quieter Portuguese Coastal Way. This stunning alternative to the Portuguese Way takes you along the wild Atlantic coast of northern Portugal, past charming seaside villages and picturesque beaches, before meeting up with the traditional route in Spain to the end point in Santiago de Compostela.
There is also the popular Best of the Portuguese Way trip, which is an affordable small group guided walking tour that takes in the most iconic stage of the Camino Portuguese and includes accommodation in Portugal’s famous parador hotels.

On this walk with UTracks we’re going to be
exploring the Camino Portuguese walking from the colorful city of Porto in Portugal
along the beautiful Coastline over the Spanish border into Galia and finishing up
in the holy city of Santiago de Compostella this is considered by many to be the most
spiritually connected of all the Caminos since it follows the route the Apostle
St James’ remains took to their final resting place the Portuguese Camino experience
with UTracks boast spectacular Coastal scenery sea flavored coastal towns world class food
and wine fascinating history and incredible [Music] accommodation this will be my fifth
separate Camino with UTracks and I’m certainly not the only one on this trail who keeps
coming back for various reasons [Music] I’ve done Camino Francis before and so I really
wanted to sort of get that experience again because they say Camino is addictive like tattoos
and it is I already did some other Caminos in Italy maybe I was attracted by the fact that there
are many Caminos but Santiago is like the Camino also historically speaking the last ones that have
changed my opinion on my life you know stripped me a bit bare and and I just felt like I needed a
little reset we just really we love to hike and um be together and meet people and that kind of
thing yeah people have all kinds of reasons why they doing this trip but at least the common
denominator is friendship you know that you’re willing to help people on the way you’re alone
with your thoughts for long stretches and I think that’s um that gives you time to reflect on a lot
of stuff for me Camino’s always provided answers so every segment that I have taken um gives me
it’s I call it my boardroom I’m walking and I’m processing things and I have all these questions
uh it’s an amazing experience I think everybody should try the Kino you know how many of days
or whatever you can do while the full Portuguese Camino begins in Lisbon and takes roughly 30 days
covering 620 km or 385 Mi like many pilgrims we will be beginning our adventure further north in
the artistic and vibrant city of [Music] Porto from Porto there are essentially two different
trails to choose from the Inland way and the Coastal Way since we’re a couple of self-confessed
beach BMS we’ll be following the Coastal Way which will take us 14 days walking 12 to 25 km or 7
to 15 m per day day if you are short on time you can always start in Tui to complete the final 100
km or 62 Mi to earn your compostella certificate there are also many different start and stop
points and slower paced ramble options along this trail walking any Camino is a great personal
challenge but you can make your experience just so much more enjoyable and carefree by doing it
with UTracks firstly UTracks will transfer your luggage for you each day meaning you can be as
lightweight as possible on the trail UTracks will provide you with a navigation app with detailed
route information they will also handpick and pre-organize your accommodation for you making
your arrival at the end of each day’s hiking hassle-free and I can tell you the accommodation
on this trip is some of the friendliest and finest we have ever stayed in all this combined
really does make this an experience of a lifetime [Music] well once again we’re leaving an incredibly
beautiful incredibly fun little town in our wake and we’re heading off towards the next one
and I think for me that is probably one of the biggest draw cards of this particular Camino
in fact all of the Caminos but especially this one are the little towns that you get to pass
through there’s no secret that the Spanish and the Portuguese absolutely love their fiestas they
love to eat they love to drink and guess what so do I so when we show up in these little towns
and they’re just so full of culture they’re so full of energy they’re so full of vibe it
really is just such a special experience for [Music] you and here in Portugal Seafood
is life and each Village has its own little Seafood Delicacies right here in this town that
we’re in it’s all about Goose barnacles [Music] you don’t really need much to do this trip
actually you know all you need is you know right fot wear backpack and that just just go out
into the nature go go walking it’s easy and um you find out why it’s good for you yourself oh you can
see places and people in a different point of view because if even if you travel by car or by train
it’s it’s not the same because you go slower and you have the chance to meet many different people
so well you meet a lot of people and it’s great to like you know have find out their stories and
why they did it and why we’re doing it you know that kind of thing so yeah and then you also
meet other people and hear their stories and it also puts a lot more stuff in perspective you
know I think anyone who comes on the way you know already knows that he’s part of a community of
you know uh Pilgrim so to speak people kind of think of it Cino is therapy Cino is vacation
it’s but it’s commo is different for everybody and for me why I love this so much is being out
of your elements out of your comfort in your home and being here and listening to the trees
and listening to the birds this is incredible and you take it with you and you live with it
forever and you kind of pine away for the next one it’s hard to explain the feeling of arriving
at the Cathedral of Santiago de compostella after completing a Camino you just get caught up in the
rush of emotion flowing not only within yourself but from all your fellow pilgrims coming together
from their own epic Journeys around Europe to be a pilgrim is to be part of something ancient but
also something present something truly special and you won’t ever really know the feeling unless
you come and experience this for yourself [Music]

Another great video. You guys do it well! I've done two Caminos with Utracks and they do a great job.
Despite incessant rain and flooded trails, our 2019 Camino Portuguese (Coastal) was transformative. I highly recommend this route.
great journy and adventure theanks
I’m 63 and have hip problems, unfit and going to do this, mentally I need to, doing it the first time which route should I take ?
You need to go through the roman Geira Road, that conected Braga (Bracara Augusta) to Rome, there you find the original roman marks, with the name carved in the stone of the roman emperor who ruled in the specific age. Its amazing how easy and beautiful is to walk that road. Romans made roads without inclinations and covered by trees for sun and rain protection. All passing through a natural park.

UTracks Travel: caminando por la hermosa Galicia. Desde A Guarda estás ya en Galicia. Un saludo desde Compostela.
From what I have seen, the section that follows the sea out of Porto is called the Littoral route, which eventually meets the coastal route out of Porto about 30 km northern.
The Litoral is the best route, Baiona, Oia and Vigo absolute must visit places. Im on the coastal right now and greatly prefer the Litoral.
I walked the Camino from Tamel, Portugal to Santiago, and it was an unforgettable journey. The first two days were especially meaningful, as I stayed at Casa de Fernanda and Noah’s Ark—both offering warm hospitality and heartfelt community dinners that created a deep sense of connection with fellow pilgrims. In the following days, I stayed in various albergues located in different cities. While convenient, those accommodations lacked the warmth and personal touch of the earlier experiences, and overall, they weren’t very satisfying.
Wish you had a great day
