Hi, hello. How are you? If you’re new here, welcome. My name is Kaitlyn and I am a fantasy writer. I solo traveled to Ireland a few weeks ago to work on the second draft of my fantasy novel. This is it. This is my book. This is actually just the printed first draft of my book, but this is Sir Callen Gay’s final lament. It follows a disgraced medieval knight as he recounts to a timetraveling journalist what went wrong on his last quest. I’m realizing now that I didn’t do a very great job of introing my travel vlogs. So, hi from the future. As you saw in the title, you and I are headed to the Dingle Peninsula today, and we’re doing something that I enjoy, but I’m not historically very good at, which is biking. And not just that, but we are biking on a very populated, very narrow cliffside road. It’s a very popular road. You might have even heard of it. It is a musto on any Ireland road trip checklist. But let’s jump back to past me, who is about to bike the sleigh head drive. Good morning. Today is Friday, August 1st, and today we are riding on a train. Let’s go. I started off the morning by heading to the train station, and I got there pretty early because it was my first time. And if you’ve watched any of these videos, you know that I am terrible with public transit, and I didn’t want to take any chances. The good news, though, was that the train station was a lot easier to navigate than any bus, and I was feeling very optimistic. The ride itself was a bit lackluster, but I blame my comfort movies for the romanticized version of train rides that I had in my head. It wasn’t bad. It was just not what I was expecting. The man sitting across from me was pretty rude. He spread out his newspaper and kept hitting my laptop with it as I was trying to write, and several times I glanced up at him to find him just fullon staring at me. Good morning. Today is Sunday, August 2nd, and yesterday did not quite go to plan. So, in a minute, future me is going to jump in and tell you all about it. Probably right now. Future me here to tell you about the little mishap that I had, which is now funny in retrospect, but was definitely not very fun when it was happening. Basically, what happened was I had purchased a hotel in Dingle off of Booking.com. Now, the listing did not have very many photos, and because I do my due diligence, I looked it up online, and I found their website, and I saw that they had a lot of great photos and good reviews. When I was looking on maps, the hotel was about 30 minutes away from Dingle Town on kind of the other side of the peninsula, but I didn’t mind because the reviews were good and it was by the sea. When I arrived in Dingle, I was pretty exhausted and there were a lot of tourists when I was trying to explore the town. So, I decided that I was going to get dinner to go and kind of pack up early and have a night in at the hotel. Now, something to note, there were only two buses running to the hotel by the time that I arrived in Dingle. And it’s a really good thing that I picked the earlier bus because when I arrived at the hotel, the main door was locked and on the wall were a bunch of lock boxes with room numbers. So, I pulled up my booking and the confirmation email and I started searching them and I could not find a combo to any of the lock boxes and nobody was answering the door. So, now I’m standing there. I’m exhausted. I’m hungry and I’m starting to panic just a little bit because I’m alone. I’m somewhere I’ve never been before and there’s not really anybody around to ask for help. And then out of nowhere, literally out of the bushes, comes this girl to my rescue. Her name was Ora. She was very sweet. Shout out to you, girl. She called her cousin who owned the BNB, and together we figured out that I was just not at the right hotel at all. The place that I booked was actually back in Dingletown, about a 5-minute walk from the bus stop, where I was waiting for the bus for about 20 minutes. I did cry a little at my mistake, and I was feeling very sorry for myself for being so stupid, but I ended up just sitting outside and enjoying the view while I ate my dinner and waiting an hour for the bus to come back around. And Orla did tell me that in the country you actually can just stand outside of your house and flag the bus down. So I ended up just sitting on the corner waiting for the bus to flag it down. I was fine. I ended up back on the bus. But like I said, it was a good thing that I picked the earlier one so that I didn’t have to pay for a taxi to take me 30 minutes back to Dingletown. In my defense, when I looked up the hotel online, the only thing that came up was for the hotel that I ended up at. They are very similarly named. One was the pier house and the other was the pier room. And at first I thought it was just me that I just made this mistake. But when I got the address from the booking, which I don’t know why I didn’t think to do that beforehand, but anyways, when I got the address, it took me to a pub. Now, nowhere on this listing did it say that this hotel was in near above a pub at all. And when I was looking on maps for the hotel, I was literally standing in front of the pub with my maps open and Maps was not registering that there was any hotel by that name nearby. So, part of me did start to wonder if maybe I got scammed. Anyways, I waited in the line for the pub because there was only one entrance and there was a line. And finally, someone was able to take me to my room, which was in a building in the back. But again, it’s funny. I can laugh about it now. Nobody was hurt. I made a friend and I was totally fine. Also, the owner of the BNB that I ended up at, his name was Cormack Begley. And the reason that he wasn’t there to help me was because he is actually a traditional Irish musician and he was on tour. I’ll have his Spotify linked below. He’s really talented. And again, shout out to Orla, his cousin, for being my lifesaver. Now, back to my past self. Okay, is she done? Are we having a laugh yet? But it’s all okay because today’s a new day and we are going on a new adventure. We are going to go rent an electric bike and do a little tour of the Dingle Peninsula. I’m really excited. I’m a little nervous, but mostly I’m excited. I was really excited about this trip, but I do have a small bone to pick with the company. Uh We Will, if you’re watching this, you need to do better because I paid extra to rent a bike from you guys because several places on your website you list that you have accompanying audio tours and an app. Tell me why. But when I show up, the girl at the counter tells me only certain locations have the tour. It’s literally on the Dingle Tours page. I just took her for a spin. Um, she’s heavy. Let’s Let’s hope that I uh don’t crash. I made a little pit stop to put my layer on. This is crazy. Um, I also can’t really film and that would be really good time for a GoPro. To get to the start of the sleigh head drive, I had to bike through town, which was a little scary, but most of the drivers were really considerate and gave me plenty of space while passing. And as soon as I started the ride, I was in awe. If this is on your list of things to do while traveling here, I highly, highly recommend getting out of the car and doing it on a bike. My mom and I drove this when we were on our road trip, but being outside in the salty spray of the Atlantic and the misting rain, surrounded by these wild flowers and just facing down the cliffs, there was nothing like it. The ebike made the journey really smooth and I didn’t have to exert too much energy except on the big hills. And again, all the drivers were really considerate and they slowed down and gave me plenty of space. [Music] I wasn’t the only one biking the road either, and I found myself leaprogging with a few other bikers the entire trip. I will say the only downside to doing the bike was that I was nervous someone was going to steal it while I was off checking some of the stops. But I don’t think I would have felt as worried about it if the tour company had provided a lock. everything [Music] that I’ve always known you would go and I’d be on my own. The trees are out and bend and break. We stay where we are. [Music] Waited up as lovers do by fusing our heart. Crashing at our walls and levies can’t hold nothing back. Built them strong and stronger still. Freedom from the wrath. And I want you. You want the truth. Fleeing like everything we do. And I’ve always known you would go and I’d be on my own. [Music] The entire time that I was biking and taking in the landscape, I kept thinking to myself that I wished my style of writing was more poetic. I don’t particularly enjoy reading flowery pros, but man, I was so envious of the potential writer that could just sit and stare and describe everything that I was seeing so as to transport you. And yet, even in those rolling hills, backdo by the choppy sea, I could only ever picture the people who might populate those places, the people who are always at the center of my stories. Standing on the cliff’s edge and looking down at the fishermen and their boats, I pictured a lifetime filled with rewarding routine. I pictured their long days stretching out like their bodies stiff from casting lines, the men in their sweaters like a second skin turning cheeks to the rain and wind. And it just reminded me that my stories will always be for me. Though I might wish that they were phrased a little differently sometimes, what’s important to me is that they feel lived in and reflect my experiences as a human being. And I’m proud of that. when the sun comes out. I also made a stop at the blasket center as well, but I didn’t stay long enough to check out the exhibit. I decided instead to go to the outdoor overlook, which had an incredible panoramic view of the ocean. The worst of it has passed us now. We’ll be getting sure to show [Music] our building stronger now and move towards the unknown. [Music] But I know you. You know the truth. Fleing like everything we do. You always know we would fly. Just take a little time. Cuz you have been the perfect shelter and a perfect storm. Leaving me in pieces and then making sure I’m warm. [Music] Yeah, I’m sure you guys can’t tell, but it’s uh it’s really starting to rain. I knew just got done. Now I have to find a place to change cuz I’m literally soaking wet. I’ll probably eat some lunch before I get on the train. Guys, look at my pants. [Music] Once I got back into Dingle Town, I mapped to a restaurant that was highly rated online, but when I got there, it was all outdoors, so there was really no place to change or warm up. So, I mapped to another location that was highly rated, and it turned out to be just across the street. It did look more promising, but it was packed with people. So, I decided to just walk around and look for something else, which was good and bad. I was starting to get really hungry at this point, but I remembered that I had a granola bar in my bag. And while I was eating it, I did think to myself, I’m literally in Ireland right now, and my only problem is that I’m hungry, which is not really a problem that can’t be solved. And that really helped to reenter me and shift my perspective back to a more positive one. The place I ended up at was called The Hair’s Corner, and I’d highly recommend it. The food was really good, and the staff were doing an amazing job despite it being really busy. From there, I got back on the bus to Trolley Station and took the train back to Cork. I got a lot of riding done on this train ride as it wasn’t as full as the first one had been. [Music] Is it pathetic or am I pathetic for knowing eternally [Music] eating truth? What a bunch of truth. You think we’re all this creation in you. [Music] The only thing I put my faith in and you. [Music] Oh, you cried at your own confirmation. [Music] The only Thank you all for hanging out with me. I hope you had fun. If you did, please consider liking and subscribing.
