I’ll bring it into the LBS when they open tomorrow. But I just saw this when I was cleaning my bike. It’s only a few months old, and this is the first time since it left the shop that I removed the rear wheel to clean it thoroughly. The chain isn’t rubbing or anything. Any idea what could have caused this, and is it a safety problem?

Chain rub caused by limit screw not being set properly.

Dirt and debris most likely. Basically right where debris could build up when caught on the cassette.
Imo, it’s probably just paint wear. As long as the carbon material eaten away isn’t deep then I wouldn’t worry about it. Tap around see how it sounds compared to the other side where it hasn’t been worn away.

It looks like just the paint was chipped away, it isn’t a safety issue at least. Good luck!
