  1. The wire will slowly saw it’s way through and create a small ditch, when that gets deep enough the wire will get stuck there. It takes years in my experience – you can easily inspect it.

  2. Usually not regularly, like years and years of use for most of them. Maybe newer, less substantial ones like you’ve posted are less durable

  3. I’ve seen them missing and broken but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one worn out from shifting.

    I needed to replace mine on my road bike after about 20000 miles, it was wearing and pinching the rear mech cable, I had spent hours trying to get the indexing working well before looking there! – replaced and all is well
