Honestly I’ve been struggling with my gravel bike recently. I got 2 wheel sets for it and one was for road and one was for gravel. Problem is I found out quickly I really didn’t like road cycling, just cars whizzing past and hearing them with there engines crawling behind you trying to get past just made the ride un-enjoyable. So then I was left with my gravel wheel set. I thought I would go for 40c Cinturato H thinking it would cover some tarmac and some off road. Problem is they were not that great on anything over fine dry gravel and then slower on the tarmac.

So I was left thinking I may just sell and get a hardtail so I can go properly off road and explore….

However I gave my gravel bike one last chance and bought a 50c Cinturato M for the front and a 45c Maxxis reaver for the rear.

This has transformed the bike from a ‘not really good at anything bike’, now it’s a a proper explore machine. And it honestly doesn’t feel bad on tarmac. But I feel like this has really opened the bike up to be an adventure machine and not scared of exploring in case it gets to ruff.

It’s made me believe that you really have to know what you want in a bike. Having something in the middle that’s not really good at anything seems like too big a compromise.
