Has Jamie just ruined his gravel bike by fitting mountain bike tyres to it? Wide gravel bike tyres are one of the most popular gravel bike upgrades you can make right now but are they just a fad or a genuine bike upgrade?

Have I just ruined my gravel bike? Well, for years I’ve been using 40 to 45 mil gravel tires, but I’ve been watching a lot of pro races. I’ve watched the Rift, I’ve watched Unbound, and everyone seems to be going to wider tires. So, I thought it was about time that I found out whether it’s the future of gravel cycling or not. These tires here, they’re 55 mil or 2.2 in. I’ve been using them for the last few weeks. And to find out if I think they’re the future of gravel cycling, you’re going to have to watch our YouTube video. There’s a link down below.

  1. Van der poel used 38mm to become world champion. Why listen to some slow usa dude who rides a fatbike when he can't make it in european pro cycling.

  2. Exactly the width I used at this years Gralloch and I had no punctures. Okay I wasnt the fastest but I really did lose count of how many people were fixing punctures or had abandoned due to destroyed tyres. Moreover, I was descending much much faster than everyone else.

  3. 2.1/2.2" tire width is the ticket off road. Why mtb's are always best. Most also prefer a flat bar when the road turns rough and hence why gravel bikes are really a fake genre of bike. Yes at Unbound, racers prefer a drop bar but they aren't aren't true mortals and they are on mtb's but with drop bar. For most, a flatbar is preferred…a bit more upright, more leverage and easier on the upper body.

  4. I ain't riding the tracks of the pro with those massive tires, so I ain't copying their bike setup. Easy as that.
I might own a gravel bike, but I see myself as cyclist who wants to ride the fastest route with the least traffic. That's 90% road with no boundaries at forests. Who cares what the pros are doing? I would never ride on those wild action loaded stunt and mud courses.
