Found this Trek Hilo bike on Facebook marketplace and wanted to know the thoughts from some of you experts! First of all, I wanted to know if it is a good beginner friendly bike for someone wanting to get into triathlons? I have seen trek is pretty well reviewed, but couldn’t find much about this specific bike.

It is also listed locally for $300, is this a reasonable price? I have seen some trek bikes go into the thousands.

TIA!

That will get you into bike riding.

But the frame isn’t a tri geometry and the seat is from a comfort bike.  So it looks like it is a hybrid bike with carbon wheels and tri handlebars?  It’s a Frankenstein bike.

For $300 it’s overpriced and lot of questionable decisions.  That said if those are really zipp wheels they’re worth more than all the rest of the bike, which may mean they’re fake or stolen.

  2. First, I would suggest going over to r/triathlon for triathlon-specific advice.

But, as someone who’s done a couple tris (so, limited experience), I’d recommend not getting a tri-specific bike if you’re a beginner. Tri bikes are sketchier steering-wise, than regular road bikes. And most people with tri bikes have a normal road bike for training anyways. Start off with a basic road bike. It will take you through multiple triathlons if you’d like, until you’re more experienced and better able to utilize and learn about tri bikes.
