Sometimes we like to introduce you to
regions of our popular destinations. Today, we’re in France and welcome to Provence. Diverse, beautiful, romantic – one quickly
runs out of words to describe this rich region in the South of France. Famous
for its fragrant purple lavender fields, colorful facades and window shutters, relaxed city
beaches and peaceful outdoor dining, this region has inspired artists and writers for centuries.
So put on your lightest summer clothes and let us take you on a ride through vineyards, and azure
waters to see the best Provence has to offer. On the coast of the ridiculously blue
sea sits the oldest city in France, the port of Marseille. Its winding streets call
for lazy strolls and the sea welcomes you as you travel in the footsteps of ancient traders,
leaving the port for adventure on the open water. Visit the stunningly beautiful Frioul archipelago
and its prison fortress that inspired The Count of Monte Cristo. Or venture further and awe at
the natural beauty of the Calanques National Park. This unique geological phenomenon offers
water sports, secluded beaches and hiking trails, but can just as easily be observed on a boat trip
between Marseille and the adorable town of Cassis. On the Southeastern coast of Provence
you’ll find the famous French Riviera, renowned for its luxury destinations surrounded
by opulent yachts, world-famous cultural events, lively seaside promenades lined with palm trees
and, of course, the legendary azure waters. Over the centuries it attracted a vast array of
famous visitors and artists, as well as the European upper classes. Visit Nice, the favorite
destination of Queen Victoria and spend a lazy day at one of its famous city beaches. Or take an
amazing food tour that we recommend to all of our JayWay guests, that lets you experience Nice with
all of your senses while tasting the best of the region . Markets with local delicacies, baked
goods and delicious french cheese are a must as well as the fresh produce of exceptional quality.
Travel to Menton for its world-famous lemons and stroll down the winding alleyways between
colorful buildings to relax as you watch rows of sailboats float lazily around the pier. A
great market opportunity also awaits in Antibes, another coastal gem adorned with one of the
world’s greatest Picasso collections. The coastal Eze is a great example of the iconic medieval
towns atop green hills, a staple of Provence. Indeed, let’s move inland to see the
great variety of charming villages and settlements. Perched on top of lush
hills, embedded in rocks and mountains, with medieval flair like the cobblestoned Lacoste,
the residence of the notorious Marquis de Sade, or with colorful facades reflecting the surrounding
landscape, like in Roussillon which sits on a large ochre deposit. All in all, you would
be hard pressed to find a village you won’t immediately fall in love with. Old castles and
fortresses await to be discovered, as well as an abundance of natural beauty. The region is
entwined with a number of rivers and waterways perfect for swimming or water sports. Marvel at
the color of the water in the Verdon gorge, visit stunning waterfalls or just observe the water flow
in the lovely village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. In the west of Provence on the river Rhone you
will find probably the most famous bridge in the region, which isn’t even a full bridge. The famous
Pont d’Avignon sits right below the enormous Palais de Papes, a legacy of Avignon’s
history as a brief seat of the Pope in the 14th century. Yet Avignon is not the only
significant historical place. Provence’s history reaches far as is apparent from the amount
of important Roman ruins and monuments. West of Avignon you’ll find opportunities to swim
right below a colossal roman aqueduct bridge, the Pont du Gard. Triumphal arches, amphitheaters
and arenas await any ancient history enthusiast. The large Arenes in Arles host bullfights and
community events to this day, and so they did in 1888 when they were painted by the city’s most
famous former resident, Vincent van Gogh. Though he lived in the yellow house for only a little
over a year, he completed over 200 paintings including some of his most famous works, during
his time in Arles. The clear air resulting from provencal mistral winds provides amazing light
conditions that attract artists to the region to this day. Artists like Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso
and, of course, Paul Cézanne who was born and lived in the enchanting city of Aix-en-Provence.
Follow his footsteps to this magical town and enjoy its relaxed atmosphere. Just like in
most places in Provence, enjoy laid-back outdoor dining under the loving shade of plane
trees. Taste the characteristic salad nicoise or other delicacies of the region and sit down
with a glass of the famous provencal rosé wine. The oldest wine-producing region in
France with over 2600 years of history, Provence is a great destination for wine
lovers. All kinds of wines of excellent quality are available, but rosé accounts for
the majority of the region’s production. So learn more about wine production in
one of Provence’s many wineries and admire the picturesque views of
landscapes dotted with vineyards. But there is another crop even more
characteristic of the region. We are, of course, talking about the lavender in Provence.
From the end of June till the beginning of August, the fields across the region are
dyed in a beautiful purple color, buzz with life and attract visitors from all
over the world. The iconography of rolling hills of lavender and lavandin fields is as
synonymous with Provence as the azure sea is with the French riviera. The scent of lavender
is inescapable and a plethora of artisan lavender products are available for you to bring home,
to remember your provencal adventures forever. Would you believe that we barely scraped the
surface of what this region has to offer? We didn’t even cover the entire Alpine region
of Provence…there is just so much to see, that you’ll have to try it yourself.
