Budget is $300 so its a little more than i wanted to spend, but considering its a bit more than just a crappy beater or entry level mtn bike, im willing to go a little over. Mountain biked a lot as a kid with my dad but havent done any biking in years, but really wanna get back into it. Since I need a bike to commute to college, figured thats a good enough of an excuse to get a mtn bike. Only ever rode specialized bikes and ive always liked them so im glad to have found one i can afford but im not too familiar with this particular model

That was a very nice bike in 2011 and if the suspension isn’t trashed it’ll still be ok BUT it’s really outdated now. The guy prefers the 29er HT because the modern geo is way better.
Options in my area have been limited…ive been looking for a medium frame and it seems those are rarely for sale here for some reason.
The other bikes ive had my eyes on are a Giant Talon 29er for 300, a Jamis Dakar for 250, and a Diamondback for 150. No idea models for the last one, theres no info but it looks pretty old.
But this one…best I can tell its the best of the bunch and possibly worth it
Its kinda old. I think with some patience you can do better in that price range. Unless you offer them $250 max then I’d say go for it.
I’d be happy if it was a free bike but I wouldn’t spend anything money on it. A modern geo hard tail will run circles around it. I’d check out the giant talon
I’d stay away from a 15 year old used carbon fiber frame, but maybe I’m just old fashioned 🤷
FSR is a hard pass for me. Good idea in concept but requires too much maintenance that only specialized can do. I had an epic for 2 seasons and it just never worked as advertised. Maybe I just didn’t set it up right, don’t know, that’s somebody else’s problem now.
