I recently got some new rims shipped to me to replace old ones that had cracked, and they were somehow find for the 3 days it took me to cycle into the wilderness, then suddenly all my inner tubes starting ripping from the into. Turns out the weird non-adhesive rim type they’d put on wasn’t wide about and was somehow sliding around, exposing the metal plates underneath and causing endless punctures.
Couldn’t even blow my tyres up, let alone ride, and was on a road closed to cars so no passing vehicles for hitchhiking. Had to spend so long pushing a heavy bike with 2 deflated tyres back to a construction worker’s came where I was eventually able to mime and gesture that I needed a lift!

What was the disaster? Looks like something to do with the front wheel, but I’d like to know the specifics for my own reference.

So many questions to be asked.
Glad you made it out to be able to post a photo that will live with you for a lifetime of stories.

Character building! Maybe too much character building though. Glad you’re OK OP!

Damn bro, what a trip. In the future, because this is the type of thing that is pretty hard to foresee, you know? But for the future, like what do you think could’ve helped avoid it? Do you think if you brought your own rim tape supplies that that would’ve helped? I mean, it sounds like the rim tape problems only came about after the original rim problems. Sometimes rims crack, and that’s pretty hard to avoid.

First words were “holy shit”.
That absolutely sucks. Congratulations on surviving.

This would be a nightmare for some, fearing about being stranded, but you managed to pull through and made it out.
Looks like I’ll really carry a roll of duct tape and old inner tube the next time I plan on going on a long ride.

Did you have two extra tubes that you could use as a liner?

Oh wow, good thing someone showed up eventually. However, Somehow it seems like a weird incident to me. Couldn’t you use a spare tube, medical tape or band-aids, duct tape to cover the nipples? Or were the spokes too long, poking through the nipple?

I don’t bikepack, but for reliability, first thing I would have thought was to run a tubeless wheelset
