I think some huck to flats a few days ago blew up my front hub. I could hear the spokes pop soon after, but assumed it was sticks wacking, because night time riding. 🤷‍♂️

I didn’t pre trip before the shuttle day today, and found them flopping around at the top of the mountain. Zip-tied the broken spokes up, and the wheel survived 32 miles and 11,000 feet of chunky descending in Ashland.

What hub are you running, that isn’t blowing up? Or is this a teachable moment, that I royally messed something up, to get the spokes to rip out like this?

  1. Disclaimer: I’m not an expert. However, it looks to me like your lace pattern is the culprit. Basically If your spokes come straight out of your hub, they pull on a little tiny piece of the hub’s flange, which is weak. If they come out at an angle, though, there is more material in front of them, and it is stronger. Your wheel is using a two cross spoke lace, which is lighter, but puts the spokes at a more greater angle, which makes the wheel weaker. Three cross is probably what you want.

For good hubs, Hope Pro 5 or any mountain hub from Industry Nine is good. I would get front and rear hubs and get both your wheel set up stronger

  2. Any hubs will do, this is a problem that never happens without a defect or a stick in the spokes
