My second venture into Essex takes me along to Colchester for the first time and a great innings where I hit 22 pubs between Rowhedge and the city centre!

Crawl very kindly sponsored by the amazing Anchor at Rowhedge!

[Music] [Applause] [Music] Welcome, welcome. How we doing? It’s a Thursday. Uh had a great day in Ipsswitch yesterday. Honestly, that was a Yeah, pleasant surprise. which I don’t know what I was expecting. Wasn’t wasn’t expecting great things, but honestly, it was really really good. I is definitely somewhere I’m looking forward to going back to for round two. So, yeah, a positive start to the week. And today, uh, just down the road in Essex, though, second trip into Essex. Did Chelmsford about a year back. Uh, and this is Colchester’s day today. So, not a place I think I’ve ever been. Certainly not drinking. So very much looking forward to getting out uh and around Colchester. Uh but first port call today uh takes you to our sponsors for the day. A big shout out and thanks to the anchor at Row Hedge uh to yeah for for sponsoring the video. Uh and I thought it best to get out here and show you this uh this absolutely stunning little place before we go anywhere else. That is the anchor and yeah Shepherd Neem pub 18th century boozer. little bit of a checkered past on this uh and I will show you something that’s a little bit interesting if we have a wonder down the side uh of this find something quite unique uh that we don’t see on pubs very often. It’s a a smuggler’s hatch. Uh and there is a particular smuggler who uh used to apparently frequent the area uh that the uh the hatch is sort of dedicated to. But this is beautiful. Look at the uh look at this. So high tide. Uh there’s boats coming all the way down. And it comes about 4:00 apparently. And later on this will be a hive of boating activity. But you don’t see many boozers with this on, do you? Let’s uh let’s take it for a wonder around inside. We’re going to take you on the on the beer front. So I’ve started my day with a shepherd’s name, Iron Aarf, and I’m very impressed. It’s one of Shepherd’s Shepherd Neem’s newer ones. Look how beautiful uh this is. So the smuggler in question, Jack Spitty, and apparently there is a tunnel uh linking sort of underneath the underneath the floor, underneath the village, uh where he would have smuggled many goods over the years, but this this whole place is a is highly impressive. Beautiful looking uh a wonderful a wonderful menu on excellent dining room. Looks gorgeous. The whole place looks gorgeous. Uh, and if you want to if you want to sit out here on the uh on the on the garden bit uh and watch when the uh the tide comes in, I can’t think of anywhere better on a nice sunny day than sitting out here with a beer uh and just watching the boats sail along there. What a great place. And I think you know what? I’m going to get some food. The menu looks amazing. When you’re this close to the uh to the sea and things, you know this fish is going to be fresh. And that looks pretty amazing. That’s going to be that’s going to set me up for the day. What a view uh to have. Fish looks absolutely wonderful. I’m a I’m a happy camper already today. Something tranquil uh and and relaxing about sitting out here. Uh just I mean I’d love to see this when the when the tide comes in, but the place is just absolutely beautiful. Uh that fish and chips was amazing. The people here are lovely. The whole of this village just looks absolutely incredible. Uh and yeah, it’s just it’s just it’s a lovely relaxing place to come and yeah, 15 minutes from Colchester City Center. That’s that’s where you’ve got women just over the over the way. Uh Murzy uh just down the bottom. So 100% this is uh this is somewhere if you’ve never heard of it like I hadn’t until today. This is somewhere you should definitely be looking to come out to. While I’m here uh in Roheaded uh just down from the anchor is another absolute little beauty. Uh a nice old real ale treehouse by the looks of things. So it would be absolutely silly of me, wouldn’t it, not to do this next. And this one is the old Albian. So this is the the Rohead High Street. But yeah, the Albian just there. Uh and the anchor is only that far away. So, while I’m here, yeah, I’m not going to uh leave a beautiful pub like this behind. Uh it’s far too nice looking for me not to uh not to get in and show you. So, what a beautiful traditional looking at booza for number two of the day, the old Albian. You want to uh you want to talk about a lucky little village? Uh this is the peak uh of being a lucky little village. Honestly, this uh this village is so fortunate to have uh two such absolutely breathtakingly beautiful pubs in it. Um I I’m blown away by both. Um the ale in here absolutely superb at Calypso for me. They’ve got one from Milestone on uh Newuk not far from where I live. Yeah, let’s have a have a look at how beautiful this little place is as well. Stunning pup, one of the pubs is all about the beer. So yeah, Milestone Brewing Newok just down the road from me that Calypso from Mighty Oak. What I’ve gone for a local Essex Brewery and I’m happy with Cherry Shoe. It’s well too early for me to start on the cherry sh. So, this beauty dates back to the 1700s uh where this part that I’m in now would have been the original room. Little horseshoe bar over in the corner. Uh and it was damaged uh in an earthquake, rebuilt in the 1800s. So, in it’s changed quite a lot over the years to to now have the bar up. Look, that table’s gorgeous. Have the bar up on this back part where you see today. But what an absolute stunner. This village is very very lucky. While I’m out this way, uh before I head off into Colchester itself, I was told about this one little village called Fingering Ho. Say it slowly, don’t be rude. Fingering Ho and a lovely pub here called this. It’s the Whale Bone. Uh see it was suggested to me. Yeah, while you’re here, come see. Lovely little out front. But look, again, in the in a in a hot summer, this is going to be absolutely stunning to sit out in. Gorgeous looking pub. I even love the color of that. Nice sort of subtle. Yeah. Yeah, it’s beautiful. That whale bone. The garden is spectacular. Uh the views aren’t too shabby either. So the whale bone at Fingeringo stop three of my day. Yeah, this is definitely this is definitely well worth having to come to see. I’m very pleased that I got worded up not to uh not to miss this one. It’s a gorgeous little place. more of a more of a diner, a dining one than a than an uh than a drinker’s pub maybe, but well worth stopping into. Couple of a couple of Adnams on the cask ale front and decent little tap mix. Staff are lovely. Can’t knock it on for the casks. Uh that easy up IPA from Adnams. I’m actually a big fan of that. That’s actually pretty cool. But I will show you uh I’ll show you around the bar. Little wonder. Uh yeah, very good reputation for food is what I was told down. The food does look absolutely amazing. Uh to be fair, but again, a lovely fireplace and just a lovely looking place. Definitely well worth going to have a little stop off at. 100% gorgeous. Gorgeous. Uh the whole area thus far absolutely brilliant for you. Uh the pub been here since 1646. Uh it’s called the whale bone because there was a whale bone tail uh tail well tail bone or something like that found just down uh just down the way. And that is actually part of the bone quality. Good way of uh naming your pub. My way in towards Colchester. Then this I think now starts. This is the first part that counts as Colchester. So outskirts work our way in. Uh first up here, Silver Oyster. Looks a proper community local. So that is going to be it’s my fourth stop of the day. And the first one that actually properly counts. It’s been Colchester for any locals. Local splits two sides. It’s got a pool table uh in the other room. Uh it’s got the cars going on. Uh just a just a nice friendly good little good little first introduction into the Colchester as a work towards the city center. Looks like a proper community logo. Yeah, the Paul Taylor stuff is through into into that room. But that is that is the first one for Colchester for the day. More on the outskirts and we’re going to head into the city center. So the other one I’m going to do now is this the artilleryman. Uh it’s a green king tucked away. Yeah. Down here. Very residential uh part of the city of where I am. But yeah, it kind of looks like a green king already. So, artillery man. My fifth stop of the day so far. Beautiful uh looking pup. Again, forks found a green king IPA. It’s the only car sale. Uh but yeah, it’s it’s a really nice looking boozer. Really friendly place. P uh screens. Uh yeah, everything barring the beer really on point. It’s uh it’s a very nicely presented uh little boozer. But yeah, two hand pumps with uh two car scale pumps with green king IPA badges on. I don’t know. Aside from that, it is a really nice looking little boozer. Really friendly. I’m just Yeah, I’m just saddened by a lot of green kings beer offering sometimes. Definitely now in the city center uh without a shadow of a doubt. So, let’s crack on. Hopefully, everything is reasonably easy to walk around. Uh, it looks to be looks to be quite a fair bit here. So, let’s get on. See how many we can get through. It’s going to be stop number six of the day and it’s going to be this. It’s going to be fashion cafe bar. So, this is uh the start of the town, sorry, city city center for Colchester. I’m going to be working my way up that way, but fashion cafe bar is going to be my next stop. are uh giving me late night party vibes. Uh looks like it’s probably quite a rocking place for the uh for the younger horn later. Uh slightly older crowd during the daytime. Uh bit of Eminem. Eminem and Acorn or whatever it is playing. I know my music sort of Brooklyn Stonewall IPA. Nice and cold. Get it down. It’s Yeah, it’s what you’d expect a city center cafe bar. So they’re like uh got nine eight or nine choices on the taps. Definitely a dance floor type space. Looks like a decent sized garden to the back. Uh food menu. There you have fashion cafe bar. Decent size, lowmaintenance garden. Uh I like gardens like this. I love those old uh the rocks in those table things. Uh and yeah, low maintenance. So not to cut, but it’s also pulled over stuff up there as well. Next would have been Queen Street Brew House. Uh but 6:00 p.m. opening apparently. That’s a shame. I love something called a brew house. We might have to rejig our loop uh back later on, but oh well. There’s plenty here. We’ll carry on. So, up to the top. Uh and I’m going to be hanging a left on this. Coldchester is quite picturesque. It is old. Um I mean the walls, the the castles, the churches looks uh looks a really nice place. You know, Colchester. So, let’s head on here. Find a pub. quite aptly named because as I you come around the corner obviously that is the uh that is Colchester Castle and stuff there. So I guess what the pub’s called. Missed it without my help, didn’t you? You knew what it was called. Kind of gave you a big a big enough hint. But yeah, is that up here? The castle and I can call it the castle cuz I’m down south so we don’t have to say castle uh while we’re down here. So the castle uh circa 1750 and then circa 1076 for something else on the thing. I’m assuming the 1076 uh would refer to the actual castle and the pub maybe 1750 which makes it pretty old. Anyway, up next feels like a nice old boozer. Um good range of Timmy, well normally a good range of Timothy Taylor’s stuff on the casks. Uh there’s golden best uh landlords bolt maker uh null spring as well, but three of them are actually off. But I have got a bolt maker and look what it’s coming. Look, sweet little tankers. I do like these little halfpipe tankers. They’re wicked. Really nice bozer. This an old bozer. Yeah, you see all the uh the proper Timmy Taylor’s cast pools. So, yeah, I went with B maker. But I love having a little tanker. I think that’s really cool. Nice thing about build your own burger. But you can see Yeah, you can see you can see from the age of that, but it’s a it’s a decent old boozer. Nice little outdoor bit on the front. We’re going to have a going to have a sit outside, have a garden. It’s peaceful uh part to sit at. Well, it’s peaceful when there’s no uh people riding those little motorbikes and things uh around and a little history board up here. The castle culture the largest ever Norman keep. There you go. There you have it. That’s ever doing that. It’s a 17th century in love a 17th century in a place that uh sits right in front of Colchester Castle obviously. So history uh personified around there. It was actually built in 1690. So is a yeah proper 17th century in. So absolutely lovely. Uh wonder a minute from there. My next stop will be this one and it’s three wise monkeys. Now I did the uh sister pup three wise monkeys in Ipsswitch yesterday. So it was one of my favorite ones uh to do yesterday in Ipsswitch as well. Uh and I’ve heard that this one is equally as good if not even better than its IPS counterpart. So, that means I’m very much looking forward to getting in here and seeing what they’ve got to offer in this one. Three Wise Monkeys next stop of the day. So impressed with the uh with the quality of the beers uh with these guys yesterday. I had to try another one of theirs today. So, uh yesterday a great journey begins. Uh and it was pretty pretty nice. Yeah, it’s only like I think 4.7 today. Uh sunk in submarine light. Uh and you uh six. Very very nice. Very very nice. Just met the head brewer. uh at a little look uh around there. I will try and sneak back in uh in a minute and get you a little video of the brewing and the tat room. The tat room bit uh opens at 5:00, so I’m here a little bit too early for that. But we can uh show you around the rest of the building and things anyway. And yeah, if that door’s open, I’ll uh I’ll sneak back in and uh do a little wicky in there for you. But this is definitely worth a visit. And I think you know what? I do think it peaks the suit. Both are great though. So that for a beerboard there. So sank in submarine light. Very impressive. Uh definitely my type of uh my type of drink. Uh my type of sensible semi- sensible percentage at six beats some of the other things but some really good car on offer down on this side as well. Uh so other monkey brewing is a separate it’s it own separate pup through there through the tap room. So what I’m going to do is I’m actually going to come back and do it separately. Got about an hour to kill. Uh there’s plenty around here still so we will come back and do that one. But there is three wise monkeys for you. Love a love a good sign. They Yeah, quality place. Time to kill and I want to hang around this sort of area for the next 45 minutes to an hour so we can go and do other monkey brewing. Uh the tap room is a separate one. So, uh honestly, their beers are amazing. Love you guys. It’s just well worth going in. So, going to hang around. We might as well kill 5 minutes and tick this off. I know. I know. You can fast forward this bit of the video if you like, but let’s face it, it won’t be long. Slug and lettuce next stop. As far as slug and lettuce is go, it’s not too offensive. Uh it isn’t. You can usually get your mix of points staff friendly. It’s not offensive actually. So it looks very similar to any other slug and unless yeah it ain’t too uh it ain’t actually too bad. So 5 minutes that was probably more like three. So you know it’s ticked off. It’s done. We move on. 100 yards down. Not well I’m wrong. 50 yards down. Uh come to this the George. Uh that’s quite a quite a building there. Nice big stunning looking. That’s clearly an old old hotel. uh and bar, isn’t it? But yeah, beautiful looking. Goes a long way back uh and stuff as well. So many buses coming down this road. But the George uh I think it’s going to be stop number nine. Maybe number 10 of the day. Maybe I’d actually count one day and stop guessing. The George up next. Fully functioning hotel uh hotel, restaurant, lounge, and bar all rolled into one. So big old business. Uh this no car scales on. Give a shame. Um it’s an all right mix on the taps. We got plenty of choice, I suppose. Uh, got myself a cider for the first time today and as I know, I know. I know. But yeah, it’s warm outside. Don’t hate me. We got some grand old features and stuff going through this. It’s old fireplace and stuff like that. But yeah, there’s no cars on. This is just the bar area that I’m sat in. I’ll have a wander through and try and get some footage of the rest for you. When you walk into the place, the uh the beams and stuff uh are quite impressive. The whole thing’s quite impressive as well. So, that staircase is pretty grand, isn’t it? It’s a very impressive looking uh looking old place. Lounge and restaurant down at one end there. Secret courtyard at the back. Yeah, I love those uh I love that staircase. Yeah, nice little courtyard garden space at the back. Yeah, good little stop actually. This nice to see a little bit of a little bit of authentic history. Five uh and I spotted something uh over by three wise monkeys uh we could nip into. killed his 15 minutes and then the other monkey brewing tap room. I love it when a plan comes together. One of the lounge brands. So, we know exactly what we’re getting. Um, but while we’re here, it is literally that close to other monkey brewing tat room. So, uh, for for the sake of killing this 15 minutes, let’s tick off the lounge brand here as well. Romano Lounge. This one. Yeah. I mean, I talk to you most days, don’t I? About the lounges. I do like this uh the lounge brand. I like the vibe of them. Uh, I said they’re always friendly. They’re always welcome. Couple of the garish lamps here stuck tucked away in the corners. They haven’t got much wall space. Uh so there’s not quite as many garish paintings as usual, but there are enough. Friendly staff. It is It is what it is. All one level one room. Big old room. Yeah, but because they got all those the glass doors, they haven’t got quite enough space for as many garish paintings as you would perhaps normally find. But nice tiled murals like wall behind us. Romano a lounge. Okay, so it’s gone 5:00. Good news is the doors open uh and we can do a be other monkey brewing the tap room. So yeah, attached to uh Three Wise Monkeys, but a completely separate tap room of its own that opens at 5. Uh trust me, I already had a little squeeze in here. This is where all the magic happens, where all the the brewing is. And whereas Three B Three Wise Monkeys has only got their core range on, there are going to be some absolute beauties, I’m sure, in here that are not available anywhere else. So other monkey brewing tap room I’m ready for you get I get something a little bit different in here something different to the core range the core range that they’ll they’ll put out there they’ll do that but there are some special ones you’ll only find in here so torn for the morning uh only released yesterday apparently a Vienna style laga it’s a new one on me [Music] I’m definitely a fan this place is pretty cool you have the uh tap line up in here. Uh so tor for the morning and convoy under darkness. A black laga. Won’t find them outside of here. And I’m really really impressed by the uh the tor for the morning, the Vienna one. It’s absolutely all wicked. Uh you can have some cast ale in here and stuff as well. Good uh some good merch uh going on as well. But yeah, all of the brewery magic, all of the brewing stuff look happens around this size. God, it’s always nice to be able to see where the where the magic occurs. And that’s where HRA going there was one of the best decisions I’ve made for a while. Absolutely superb place. They’re just such nice guys. Um and yeah, when it comes to brewing, when it comes to beers and and certainly stuff of like slightly different styles, not that many breweries you you go to like brew black laga and things like that. So really nice to get in there and see uh what they do and and they’re passionate about it, too. So yeah, top notch. I’m a I’m a convert. I’m a big big fan now of other monkey brewing. Right, walking back up uh along the street then past suggest uh the George and all of them. And the next one uh about 2minut walk from other monkey will be this. It’s called after office hours. I mean technically I’m in my office hours and I this kind of is my office. Um yeah there’s there’s no denying that this is my uh my full-time office uh my full-time place of work. So, after office hours, uh, very grand looking building again. Absolutely stunner. Obviously, another mega old one right next door to a nightclub called Trilogy. I’m certainly way too old for nightclubs. Uh, but we’re not too old to do the pub after office hours. K Star Pubs owned. Um, so yeah, six six tap offerings. Uh, one of which is Fosters, so five tap offerings, but it’s it’s a late night venue. This is definitely a party style venue that feeds that nightclub. I’m telling you, it does. Yeah. I mean, it’s the whole vibe of it uh shirts to me. Sort of late night, Friday night, Saturday party style venue, and I’m sure it fits in perfectly well with with that. Yeah. Not a not a not not a sort of pub you’re going to come and sit and drink in all day, but certainly somewhere you’re going to you’re going to nip into if you’re heading to that nightclub next door. I am at Shore. You know what that music they’re playing in there is. But I know that I’m way too old for it. So, that’s how I can normally tell it’s time to uh carry on. That’s definitely a feeder for the nightclub, which you know what it’s is obviously doing its job. So, just cuz it’s not necessarily my uh cup of tea doesn’t mean it’s not somebody else’s. We move on. Next one is the Camel Lodinum. And I I only think I’ve got that right because there was a very kind gentleman at the bus stop that helped me out cuz otherwise I would definitely not have been able to say that. I came up with several different connotations in my head uh of how you would say that. So, Camealodinum is how we’re going. Uh it’s another green king. Uh let’s pray. Let’s just just put our hands together and say please the gods of green king. Uh as if we’ve ever called them that before. Please do not let this just have green king IPA and aba on cask. Here we go. Camealogum is the ancient Roman word for Colchester. Kind of makes perfect sense now. I just thought they were trying to confuse me and throw a curveball out. But yeah, Camelotum, the ancient Roman word for Colchester. There you go. education year educational channel. You can tell YouTube this is literally a learning channel. I think I might get a bonus. I’m sure I won’t. Odds weren’t that kind cuz yeah, two advanced attempt or uh pay day. I’ve got level heads. Beautiful looking pub. Actually is a really really beautiful looking pub. Like look at it. Green King. Yes. Said I I can’t ever fault the buildings. big old pub as well. Goes a long way back. Uh and we’ve educated you on what uh what the name meant. So, you know, good good good stop the end of that road. And I know full well there’s a couple down to the right that I definitely want to do. Then I get confronted by this. There’s a definite hill, a downward hill admittedly, but what goes down has to come back up. That’s the problem. But there are Yeah, there’s a couple up here. There’s one. That’s a gorgeous building, by the way. That uh looks looks like it was the post office at one time, but surely that was an old coaching in at one time. Gorgeous. But we’re going to wander down this and then pan all the way back up. I’m sure 2/3 of the way down this hill, right? H and was instantly regretting my life choices. Like, why on earth would I want to walk back up this hill? The pub at the bottom probably isn’t even worth it. What’s the point in walking down this hill to have to walk back up it? Then I got here. So, that uh is the Marquis of Graanby. Uh I think on Google which is called the Marquis but outside it says the Marquis of Granby and that is quite spectacular isn’t it? So you know what yeah I’m not looking forward to walking back up that but I I definitely think that to come down and see just to come down and see that in general uh built in 1520 it’s just stunning. So I think yeah I’m already I’m already all right with the fact I walked down to it. Whether or not we need a taxi back up who knows. There you see Doom. That’s the first thing. That’s a that’s a a soul point. It’s obviously Heineken style pub zones which is criminal. Um I don’t know maybe I can’t actually see Heineken but yeah Fosters Neck or something. I don’t know. But there’s your there’s your beer offering. Uh but the beauty of this is going to be on a little wander around and it exceptionally beautiful. It really is. Uh the absolute tragedy of the fact that this is owned by Heineken again one of the uh the greatest pieces of our history. heritage is owned by a a company that don’t know what they’re doing. They they just don’t really they don’t look after people. They shut more pubs in this country than anybody else. And that’s the that’s the that’s the sad fact about it. But this is absolutely beautiful. Only the I’m showing the bar area the drinks and stuff. Like you can call them drinks. But yeah, look at this. Look how stunning this place is. Uh let’s have a little wander through here. Look at it. The whole place is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Even the uh even the internal windows are exquisite. Decent uh decent little menu to be honest. Whoever’s uh like the whoever fried like got the uh got the teny and stuff is doing a really good job at producing what they can foodwise and and stuff. But yeah, this is the this is the pool room. This is a pool room. Look at it. Amazing place. Uh I’m just sad for the the tenants that they they have to they have to work for Heineken. Even this little bit. These stocks are for unruly punters. Yeah, I know a few of them. We walk uphill. Wish me luck. I might see you at the top. You know what? I made it. Uh but we’re definitely going to stop for a cocktail. Chapels. That’s my next stop. Stop 16 of the day so far. Gorgeous old building again. Chapels cocktail bar. Uh next door to Stonegate. But anyway, let’s get into this. Let’s see if we’ve got a pina colada for me. I could definitely do one. I was that hill. I asked I said, “Do you do a pin?” He said, “Of course we do a picada.” That’s what every cocktail bar should say. No, I can’t do a pin colada, mate. Like, do you not cocktail bar then? This is a cocktail bar. This is This is a cocktail bar. Looking uh looking forward to my pine colada. Look at that. I love it when they when they’re served in a glass that actually looks like a pineapple. That is That’s always a winner for me. Yeah, that’s uh that’s absolutely topn. Yeah, I’m dead happy. Absolutely dead happy with that. 1025. That ain’t even uh that ain’t even it. I’ve paid a lot more for a lot worse. I’m happy with that. Really good little cocktail bar. Yeah, that’s why that’s why. Sweet little cocktail. Honestly, they’ve got actually a decent uh decent section though. If you like Brew Dogs, beers, uh six six choices from Brew Dog. Four other bits. But yeah, top uh top-notch guys uh running it. Really, really good penicolada and a and a really decent looking little uh really decent looking little gaff. Really uh yeah, big fan. And just what I needed. Just what I needed having just walked up that hill. Just what I needed. Nicolada was just what the doctor orders. You walk up this hill and it is a hill, believe me. You walk up that uh you get to get the chapels, pin, really, really good pin colada as well. So, yeah, I’m happy. But right next door. So, yeah, this is a tiny tiny little bit of the brow hill now. And we’re done. Uh next door, Churion. Uh it is a stonegate. It’s one of their social pub and kitchen brands these days. One of the newer uh stonegate connotations. So honestly, there are so many noisy Yeah, like that noisy motorbikes around here as well. Like sort of people you just want to clothesline uh and take down as they go past. But we won’t do that cuz we’re a grownup Centurion. My next what I say. I do think that these probably are a better uh I say a better brand of Stonegate ones than quite a lot of the others. So I don’t mind it. I’ve got some I’ve got a few decent little tipples amongst things. Uh Cosmic Drop for me here. which is actually all right. Um, it’s alpha friendly. It is what it is. Stung it. Mix the points. It’s a bonus. When you’ve been in one of these stung uh t you’ve pretty much uh you’ve seen the layout. You’ve seen the uh you’ve seen the way they look. They they’re very sy. But yeah, at least they are they do have a few decent little tipples on. Uh no cask, but decent keg stuff. Uh staff are friendly, too. detour onto a little side street off that main road where there are two uh that we definitely need to visit. So, I’ve heard uh the first of which, you know, when I make that noise, it’s probably going to be a craft beer bar. It’s a little craft beer bar that I’ve heard a lot about called Two Brews. So, that’s the main street I’ve come. You see where Halifax is? If you walk down the little side street opposite Halifax one, you will come quite easily to two brews. So, that is stop 18 of my day so far. And I’m very excited uh to get in and see what these guys have got on offer cuz I’ve only I’ve heard massively good things about it in there. So, we’ll do the beer for you first. Yeah. So, I’m going number seven concerning badges. Big fan of nothing stuff. So, looking forward to that. 5.8% West Coast IPA. Yeah, I see why so many people said I was going to absolutely love uh this one. Actually, you can tell already. This is right up my street. What a great looking little gaff little uh I mean it’s only it’s craft beer I say but I take you on a little a wonder uh and show you how beautiful uh honestly there is some absolutely stalking beers in it. It’s a 10 out of 10 this for me. Set on the fridge. George you you talk about I mean there are some abs I mean track nothing bound. There are gravity. Yeah there are some absolute B mills yonder pastor. There are some absolutely and some Belgian uh some Belgian stuff just in case. B city look no matter what you want in here this is uh this place got you covered. It is absolutely incredible. That’s a a little craft beer bar. People are people are phenomenal. Uh places is a 10 out of 10. Absolutely belting. Absolutely loved it. Uh but I thought there were only two down here. Uh there’s actually three. We come out the front door and I’ve spotted this. We can’t leave a puppy, can we? Smith’s Bar Cafe. Uh it looks like I mean barbers. Looks like they turned the barbers into a bar. I mean that is the best kind of barbers, isn’t it? So let’s do this. Smith’s up next. Uh sweet little guy. Oh uh no no no beers on the on the bar. But always have a little vodka especially this summer. Little pallet cleans in moa. Look at this jukebox. Can’t go wrong. Can I go wrong with an old school looking jukebox? I know. I know it’s all digital these days, but it still looks beautiful. Certainly does. I’m a big fan. Love Gaff. Another one on here. More of a beastroy uh type pub uh than a drinker’s one, I think. But while we’re here, it makes no sense to steer clear, does it? Stop 20 of my day. It’s called the Church Street Tavern. Hence, we’re on Church Street. And you can probably hear I don’t if you heard those bells, but Church Street. Yeah. So, Church Street Talon stopped 20 of my day. Yeah, it’s definitely It probably is more restauranty. I don’t think it’s really quiet tonight. Bit of a shame. It’s nice looking. I have found a new beer though. There’s actually some decent little bits I’ve never seen before. We got on. But yeah, there’s a couple on there that I definitely have never sampled. And the one I’ve gone for deep seas. Uh it’s Belgian style plant. It’s nice actually. It’s nice looking. But yeah, it’s definitely Yeah, I definitely don’t get the feeling this is a drinkers drinkers style boozer. All right, cold chesty a bit silly now. Trying to get there were a few there’s so many still on my list of things I want to get to today that I’m not going to get to today cuz I keep spotting more things. I’m not just going to ignore it and carry on. But yeah, you get to the end of this then and in front of me the fox and fiddler. I always think that would make a great name for like an accountant or something like that. Uh it’s I I genuinely think that is probably the first fox and fiddler uh I’ve done on the pub crawl. So it is going to be uh the 21st stop of today. Uh I’m already regretting my life choices, but Fox and Fiddler 21 decent boozers. Uh got a car scan on. I’ve never tried Mold and Gold. Uh which is Mighty Oak again. Uh Essex base. [Music] Uh yes, Mighty Oak Essex base. I uh first time I had one of theirs was earlier. Was very impressed. Looking forward to this one. Yeah. Looks like more of a local thing. It’s got the got the football and stuff on. It’s a really old nice looking place though. It’s got the uh Yeah, I said got the got the football. It’s clearly an old apartment. Look at that that little stonework. That’s that’s very impressive. Old fireplace and stuff like that. But nice looking nice looking pub. Definitely well worth well worth a stopping. The the beer’s good too. So well worth a stopping. But yeah, wasn’t on my wasn’t on my original plan. It’s a really belting looking boozer all the way through. It’s long, narrow, it’s got some wonderful old features and stuff in it. Uh, and a pool table down here at the back. These little stone steps. Yeah, pool table at the back. But yeah, what a quality boozer. Um, yeah, I’m glad I’m actually really glad I stopped in. Uh, the the Moldens one I had was absolutely topnotch as well. Every staff are great. Yeah, top top boozer. 21 know right? There were probably six at least on my list of ones I wanted to get to today that they’re not even the the one that’s next. Um, so you know what? Uh, I think we’re going to do one more. We’re going to draw a line under today. Say I can’t wait to come back. Honestly, culture has been banging. Cold just been great, man. I wasn’t actually again I wasn’t much like I wasn’t expecting that much. It’s been banging. Let’s get this done. 22. It’s called a bull. Uh, and it sounds I mean I can hear a karaoke going on. I can definitely hear a karaoke going on. I mean, maybe I won’t just go home after one beer in here. I’ve got a big day in Birmingham this m day inst. I love the ball statue on the top of that as well. That’s not that’s proper quality that right the ball. Uh it’s up top 22 of the day. Whether or not it’s the last stop or not depends on how the next like 15 20 minutes goes, I suppose. But let’s do the bull and we’ll we’ll find out together. I might have accidentally fallen into putting a karaoke song in. I really shouldn’t be allowed to like walk and drink and film and do other things. So yeah. Um I don’t see the rest of the night unfolding overly positively for anybody that’s listen to me sing to start with. What do you hope? Well, um we’ll see. You know what? It’s a nice old school boozer. It’s definitely another historic old boozer. Yeah. Karaoke all night. Can’t go wrong. Can’t go wrong with that. Um, yeah, the Wi-Fi is absent, but bit of a garden space. Uh, yeah, the bit the beer out too much, but you know, the atmosphere, the atmosphere, the people, that’s all, Sam. And a bit of karaoke. Why not? I could 100% get tucked in there standing here all night and doing karaoke for the rest of my uh rest of my life. I love singing. I don’t think I’m very good at it, but, you know, I enjoy it. I I really like it. [Music] Let’s get another drink and out. You know what? I’ve had I’ve had a good I’ve had a good [ __ ] I’ve done a good shift today. Um it’s been phenomenal around here to be honest. Really, really, really good day. Um there are so many more that I wanted to get to today that I haven’t got to, but it just means cold chest round too. It’s coming up soon, is it? So, you know, it’s been Yeah, it’s been inspiration. It’s been It’s been enlightening. I loved it. I’ve loved it. Um this is 100% well worth a well worth a day at. Uh if you want something like Yeah. Colchester. Bang. Well played. Looking forward to seeing you again. Cheers for watching.

  1. Definitely get a Wivenhoe pub crawl in. Loads of decent ale pubs coming from the top, down towards the water.

Pubs for round 2 in Colchester –

    Purple Dog
    Magnet
    Fat Cat
    The Ale House
    The Odd One Out
    Victoria Inn
    Hole In The Wall
    Hospital Arms
    Queen St Brewhouse

  2. Interesting I did a crawl of Colchester a few months ago, a more modest 6 pubs.

Only one overlap, the Three Wise Monkeys, other than that I did in rough order of preference

    Odd One Out

    Purple Dog

    Alehouse

    Fat Cat

    Victoria

    Playhouse
I think for the most part the best of Colchester is still to come.

  3. Another excellent vlog. An entirely deserved sideswipe at Slug and Lettuce, for which the word 'generic' might have been invented.
Perhaps a vlog from Lewes, East Sussex at some point in the near future?

  4. The Victoria Inn should have been included, it’s past the Marquis at the bottom of the hill though, so you do it on the way out towards the train station.

    Purple dog is decent

  5. I live in Rowhedge…we're very lucky with our two pubs. Glad you made it to TwoBrews…great place. The Odd One Out on Mersea Road is a proper little boozer too…couple of decent ones in Wivenhoe too…just short bike ride from Rowhedge

  6. There are some good pubs in an arc south and west of the town centre. The British Grenadier, the Odd One Out, the Britannia (which has its own amazing Gurkha restaurant), the New Inn (under new management but sounds worth a look) the Fat Cat, the Ale House and my beloved Victoria Inn are all places you should visit next time. There are other great pubs further out (such as the Live and Let Live) but all of those are literally within walking distance. EDIT I omitted The Playhouse, the Wetherspoons pub only a few doors from the Fox and Fiddler (formerly Headgate Tavern) which you did visit. Interesting building (the former garrison theatre) with the virtues and vices of all JDW pubs everywhere.

  7. Moved to Colchester about 5 years ago been in and around the area all my life though lived close by in a town called halstead, have to say tho i love Colchester but the pubs are dire, serious lack of beer gardens most of them are small and dingy, alot of the towns and villages around the area have much better boozers.

  8. Live and Let Live, The Ale House, The Fat Cat (same co as one in Ipswich and Norwich), The New Inn, The Odd One Out, The British Grenadier, The Victoria, The Magnet, Coda Venue you missed near The Castle) and of course The Queen St BrewHouse. all pubs I visit when I can 🙂 Spoons, Purple Dog, The Kings Head, The Hospital Arms and The Hole In The Wall worth a peek.
