Day 214. 51km (91,106kms 8yrs)

After a drizzly but lazily enjoyable rest day, we set off together along the lake with the intention of travelling about 50kms to another famous waterfall.

At first the path was lovely; through quaint villages with cheerful locals. In Mrkonjić Grad a golden domed Orthodox Church stopped us in our tracks but a very grumpy woman made us feel quite unwelcome. She don’t like where I’d put my bike; on the grass leaned against the back of a bench (Despite no signage against being on the grass) I put leggings on before entering the church so as to cover my knees but it seemed whatever I tried to do she was angry with me. The church interior was lovely though; I do enjoy orthodox churches, though my experience of the custodians is often quite negative.

From the town we began a climb that lasted on and off for the better part of the afternoon in short sharp bursts. It must’ve exceeded 10 or 12% in places so was very tough going. Tougher still was the descent though, when the unsealed road deteriorated into a barely navigable track so steep that I had to walk the bike down a good couple of kilometres of it. Olivier meanwhile with his wider tyres and motocross experience seemed unbothered by the loose rocks on a 10%+ gradient. All the while I got grumpier and grumpier as time slipped away and with it my anticipated afternoon of cold beers beside the waterfall. At last we returned to the bitumen and made it down the final steep sealed stretch, grabbed a 2ltr bottle of beer and continued the final kilometre to the gorgeous Krupa Falls. A little wooden bridge with steep steps was the final obstacle between me and a cold beer, but at last we’d found a good shelter to camp, and benches from which to enjoy dinner beside the cascades.

They need salt. You need to get used to the to the steering. It’s It’s really difficult. Morning. Good morning. Hi. Uh so it’s our first day cycling in tandem. And we’re going 50 km uh roughly I think 50 km an hour on the dirt road to an unpronouncable town and then to a waterfall hopefully and pony. I’m going to take a photo. Oh, look. Solar panel. That’s the Russian flag, isn’t it? Eating here yesterday because I thought Hello. Hello. Nine. Yeah. Nine. Yeah. Oh, no. New Zealand. We are used to sport the Muslim thing that sometimes I had. I was wondering if there were differences between the mosques or not. You know this 6% Descent is okay. Whoa. Notice it’s always the woman. Why did I get this from the supermarket now? I don’t know. Do you want me to remove him or her? Please, please proceed. So, I I It’s hurting. It’s releasing some acid or something. No, that didn’t look at me. Oh, yeah. They’re really weird. And I removed one from my bicycle already. Maybe it’s the same. Had a woman very angry at us at the church. I think it was something to do with clothing. So, I put my leggings back on, but she wasn’t happy about where I left the bike either, but she wasn’t very good at communicating what the problem was. So, it was just very tense. And then I locked myself out of my internet banking. So, my brain is a bit frazzled right now. And we’re climbing. There’s more Russian flags here than anything else. Another Russian flag. Well done. [Laughter] Yes, please. From this guy. From a guy. Oh, thank you. Well, I don’t know if he can ride this, but I can’t ride this. It’s annoying because I should be sitting at a waterfall enjoying a nice cold beer at this point, but this has really slowed me down and I’ve lost lots of lovely waterfall beer time and that’s why I’m grumpy. We’re not there yet. Oh, this beer appears to be called Helen. It’s got my name on it. Cheers. Helen Peo is my beer. A bit late, but we’ve got two types of bread. Some smoky cheese, sliced tomato, very nice kac jam crisps, some kind of salami.
