If I loosen the cable tension enough it doesn’t skip but I get major chain rub in middle and big ring, plus slow up shifting. But as soon as I increase the tension it starts dropping.
Doesn’t seem to be a sweet spot. I’ve routed the cable according to the manual.
Could it be a shifter issue? I did have to WD-40 the rear shifter to get it working so it is old

What shifter are you using?
Gently.
How old is the front derailleur? How old is the shifter? Did it get much use (wear and tear?)
Have you tried installing a new cable? Old ones can stretch.
What’s the small hex bolt that is protruding on the rear of the shifter? Is it loose or supposed to be proud of the surface?
