48mm to 55mm might not be out of the question, but you need to measure the gap vertically and horizontally, and check what the rear can take. Look near the bottom where the chain stays meet the bottom bracket, it’s usually pretty narrow.

Disc brakes or rim brakes? If rim (looks like it…) check your caliper width.

From my experience in most cases the limiting factor is the height, not width. I’d say you can probabaly go for 32mm
