This summer I built two red, steel, singlespeed bicycles. Aside from that they are complete opposites in most regards – one is very slow, one is very fast. The “workhorse” is my daily commuter, it takes me everywhere around town, carries heavy loads smoothly, and even shines after dark with the dynamo lights. The “racehorse” is of course my SSCX racing bike, at our local Tuesday night series here in Portland. They are both amazingly fun bikes to ride in completely different ways, and dare I say I love them equally.

Boooo to tensioners. Boooo. Just pay the $ get an eccentric hub and class it up if your so set on converting a vertical drop frame.

  2. That poprad is awesome. Have you tried for a magic gear on that one? It would be so much better without that tensioner, though it limits your gear choice. I think I had 36×16 work perfect on my canti poprad back in the day. If you measure your stays super carefully the eeehouse calculator can help you out ( https://eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu ) but it’s hard to get things exact.
