I got this second hand bike that has seen a lot of use and I want to fix it up to make my commutes nicer.
Things I've done:
-taped some wires together and to the frame.
-high vis tape for increased visibility.
-bled the break lines, new pads are on the way.
-added a basket and some cheap locks.
-fixed the battery charging socket by replacing and soldering a new one.
What are some moderate to inexpensive upgrades and maintenance should I do? I don't want to take it into a shop, I want to learn.

Check the chain, chainring and cassette for wear. Clean and wax the chain. If the shifting is sticky replace the cable and housing, lube the shifter. Might want to rebuild the fork although that’s kind of ambitious and I would leave that alone if it works. Check for age cracking in tire rubber. Replace if necessary. Also I really stand by Slime brand extra thick inner tubes that have Slime sealant installed. Flats suck.
Get a park tool cc4 chain gauge, if the bike has been used heavily and not well maintained then it’s likely the chain at least needs replaced, at first the best upgrades are contact points, pedals, a saddle you actually like sitting on, grips. The brake hose goes on the inside of the fork 😉 read up on bike fit to help yourself get into a comfortable position, consider how to get all your work gear on the bike, backpacks are no fun. Park tool youtube is your friend, know how to do a safety check to make sure the wheels and headset don’t have play
