A bike tour taking in the unpaved Cormet d’Arêches and the Cormet de Roselend climbs. 87km and 2700 meters of climbing. You can go over the col du Pre to bring it close to 3000 meters.
It is best to climb the Cormet d’Arêches from the Beaufort side as there is less gravel on the Tarentaise side.
A lot of motorcycles on the Cormet de Roselend with some very close, high speed passes. 🙁
The word cormet, probably derives from culmen, summit, indicates the end of the valley, the passage that connects with the opposite slope and corresponds fairly well to the word Col or Pass.

Today’s ride starts in Beaufort,
climbs up to Areches and then up to the Lake St Guerin and then over the top of the unpaved Cormet d’Areches before a descent
and traverse over into Bourg St Maurince. A bit of climbing on this
section, 200 meters extra and then a long climb up to the Cormet de Roselend Over the top of the Col past
the lake de Roselend and then down into Beaufort for 2,700 m of climbing. Here’s the bridge. Look at
those nasty longitudinal slats. Whoa. Don’t want to go down those things. A nice late summer early autumn morning and we’ve
just pulled out of Areches starting off this morning. We’ve done about 450 m and where are we
heading? We’re heading up to the dam St Guerin and then we’ll see from there. I’m just riding
the top of zone two trying to keep, for the first climb which is about 1400
meters, a nice steady easy tempo. Leave something in the tank for later. You can see in
my sunglasses where we’re heading to. Blue sky. [Music] A pleasant lunch stop in Al Borgo Saint Maurizo, which is just behind me here. It’s about the
46 km mark. So, it’s halfway in distance and bit over halfway in altitude. We’re going up
this road now. 20 km to the Cormet de Roselend A lot of motorbikes. everywhere. This is Boneval les Bains and somewhere down
here is a hot spring. The Romans knew about it and at one time there was a swimming pool
complex and a half finished hotel on the right, but I think it’s all been knocked
down now. We’ll see. It was just up here somewhere. It was there for years, but it
was knocked down recently. big stone building, but there was a swimming pool with
hot water, diving boards, everything. Back in Beaufort after an absolutely
monster ride for me. Only 87 km, but 2,700 meters of climbing. It’s as much as
I’ve done for a long time. Very warm here now.
