Hi all,

Bought this bike second hand about 3 months ago and everything has been going great until today. Since purchasing I did notice some creaking in the cockpit of the CP0018 but nothing else until the ride back today: after about an hour riding the headset and steering seized. There was a lot of friction and force required to turn the handlebar. I took apart the headset once I got home and took these photos. Not a total novice to maintenance but this is definitely pushing my knowledge, especially with carbon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. I think the Impact Protection Unit IPU got smashed, buckled, and that scraped the carbon of the steerer tube.

I had a similar issue upon delivery; I believe the handlebar was turned above 90deg with force; this deforms the IPU, which in turn can then scratch the steerer tube if one keeps using the bike.

The solution is a new IPU, which is very cheap, but only if the tube is not damaged (which I cannot say, I highly recommend you to contact Canyon or a carbon repair shop).
