Bought some used GRX RX400 calipers and pads that still appeared to have a bunch of life left in them, but they absolutely HOWLED with my old RT54 rotors. Obviously some contamination going on. I sanded the rotors and pads with 220 grit and cleaned them with isopropyl rubbing alcohol… took them out to re-bed and after 15-20 hard stops they appeared to quiet down, but then I took a look back in the shop and this is what happened. Pads are L05A RF, which should work just fine with the RT54 rotors marked resin-only. Just trying to figure out what the heck happened with these. Will contamination cause the material to just fly apart like that? Already have new IceTech pads/rotors on the way for a complete swap with brand new stuff…

Old, contaminated, and overheated. That would be my guess anyway.
When you say used calipers and pads do you mean both were used or were the pads brand new?
It is really hard to get back some contaminated pads, better to just replace them anyway. Maybe some corrosive product got into the pads.
Looks like the iso broke down some of the adhesive between the pad and the plate
