After 15 years of cycling it finally happened. I was hit by a car

We were on the road this morning riding to our local gravel loop when a car plowed into me from behind and drove over me. The car pulled out of a subdivision as we rode past and hit me straight on. It was like a dream. The feeling of the impact then being under a moving vehicle is something I’ll never forget.

I’m sitting in the hospital now and feeling lucky to be alive. The car drove over the right side of my body fracturing five ribs with a minor lung puncture. My right leg is a giant bruise, but luckily no broken leg bones. Lots of abrasions, some road rash and random bruising/soft tissue injuries as well. I’m very thankful I didn’t fracture my femur or crush my skull for that matter.

I’m not exactly sure the full extent of the damage to my bike. My rear wheel exploded and it appears my derailleur ripped completely off hanger and all. My riding partner says the frame looks ok. My mechanic will go over the frame and document all of the damage this week.
